Discover Painesville through its public spaces, history, and the landscape along the Grand River. Veterans' Park, also known as Painesville Square, has been a park since the city was founded in 1800. The Lake Erie College campus also has historic sites, and trails wind through wetlands. This gives visitors several ways to spend their time: exploring local history, enjoying nature, or attending events throughout the year.

Parks and traces of the city’s history

Local history and a distinctive tree come together at Charter Oak Park. The park was dedicated in 1900 by the granddaughter of General Edward Paine to celebrate the city’s 100th birthday. Paine is considered the founder of Painesville. A monument to him stands in the park and holds his remains. The “Charter Oak” also grows there: the oak was transplanted from Connecticut, General Paine’s home state.

Downtown Painesville is another point of reference for the city’s history: in July 2020, the U.S. National Park Service added the downtown area to the National Register of Historic Places. The Lake Erie College campus is home to notable buildings that have been there since the college was founded. College Hall is linked to the early days of teaching: when the college opened its Painesville campus in 1859, some of its first classes were held there. These sites offer different ways to explore the city’s past—from a public park to the historic downtown and the college’s history.

Wetlands along the Grand River

If you’d rather focus on nature, the Grand River Conservation Area offers a 16-acre natural floodplain of the Grand River in Painesville. A trail about one mile long winds through wetlands with native plants and vegetation. These measurements give a clear sense of this natural area and its trail. It offers a different way to experience Painesville than its historic parks and buildings. Choosing between nature and city history can therefore shape the character of your stay.

Events and local products

Several community events take place throughout the year at Painesville Square, also known as Veterans' Park. They include the Easter Egg Hunt, Farmers Market, Summer Concert in the Park Series, Party in the Park, Art in the Park, and Spirit of the Season. The Car Cruise takes place on Fridays from May 16 to September 19, weather permitting. The park’s pavilion is also a popular venue for weddings and special events.

In 2026, the Painesville Farmers Market was held on Thursdays from May 28 to September 18, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Square. Vendors offered local produce, sauces, flowers, honey, and soaps, and a different food truck was there each week. This year’s market has ended. As a seasonal example, it shows the local products and foods that can be part of a visit.

The Painesville Fall Fest is scheduled for Saturday, October 10, 2026, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Kiwanis Recreation Park. The program includes hayrides, trunk-or-treat, pumpkin decorating, Halloween games, and prizes. The Summer Concert Series takes place on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. at Painesville City's Grand Amphitheater; dates for summer 2027 have not yet been announced. If you want to plan your trip around events, distinguish between a festival with a confirmed date and a concert series whose dates are still to come.
