Guernsey combines expansive bodies of water, nature experiences, and a remarkable glassmaking history. Those planning a trip with varied interests can combine days by the water, walks, wildlife watching, and cultural discoveries. When choosing your vacation rental or holiday home, it is therefore worth deciding first what you want to focus on: water sports, nature, or history.

Lakes, Trails, and Activities on the Water

Seneca Lake covers 3,550 acres of water and 4,065 acres of land. There are five public boat ramps on the lake, one of them at Seneca Marina. Boating, fishing, water skiing, and tubing are available at Salt Fork Lake. These options offer various ways to enjoy active days on the water without every trip having to follow the same rhythm.

Seneca Lake Park is located in Guernsey and Noble County near Cambridge and can be reached via I-70 and I-77. For those traveling by car, this route provides a specific point of reference. At the Lore-City end of the Great Guernsey Trail, there is also a self-service kayak rental facility for the Leatherwood Creek Water Trail. Those choosing vacation accommodation for a trip focused on water activities can already take such destinations into account when planning their days.

Shorter nature experiences are also part of the offering. Senecaville State Fish Hatchery has walking paths, including a section of the Buckeye Trail. These trails are open daily from sunrise to sunset for wildlife observation. In Cambridge City Park, the Armstrong Covered Bridge, also called Clio Covered Bridge, is part of a walking route.

Discover Nature and Learn About Regional Wildlife

In the wider region, The Wilds is a nearly 10,000-acre nature conservation and preservation center in southeastern Ohio. It was created on reclaimed strip-mining land. The 5,400-square-foot Welcome Center at Deerassic Park offers another way to explore wildlife. There, interactive, hands-on exhibits showcase Ohio’s native wildlife. For families with different age groups, such stops can provide a welcome change of pace between longer excursions and more leisurely visits.

Glass History and Museums in Cambridge

The region’s cultural history is closely connected to glassmaking. The National Museum of Cambridge Glass preserves the heritage of the Cambridge Glass Company, which produced handmade glass from 1902 to 1958. Exhibits, interactive displays, and demonstrations show how this tradition is reflected in Cambridge. At Mosser Glass, the retail store is located at the center of the factory and sells handmade glassware. Factory tours are also offered at the historic site, providing a behind-the-scenes look at glass production.

The Guernsey County Museum is housed in a historic, 199-year-old building considered the oldest timber-framed house in Cambridge. Exhibits include a replica coal mine, a reconstructed one-room schoolhouse classroom, and an area dedicated to the county’s military history. Together, these displays bring different chapters of the region’s history to life.

Events and Unique Experiences

At the Welcome Center of Dickens Victorian Village in downtown Cambridge, costumed helpers assist visitors. Souvenirs are available there, and Victorian dress-up is possible at the Imagination Station. The Guernsey County Fair takes place every September and includes livestock shows, harness racing, truck and tractor pulls, live music, rides, games, and a children’s area.

A seasonal highlight is the light show at the Guernsey County Courthouse. The historic 1881 building shines every evening from November 1 through January 1 with tens of thousands of colored lights synchronized to traditional and contemporary Christmas music. Live bluegrass is performed on Fridays at the restored Pennyroyal Opera House on the Historic National Road; homemade meals are served before the performances.
