Erie County combines maritime history, wildlife observation and diverse trails with unique experiences in Sandusky. Cedar Point is located in Sandusky, as are several museums with very different focuses. The county also offers preserves along Lake Erie, river landscapes, viewpoints and MetroParks with trails through forests, prairies and wetlands. When choosing a vacation rental, it is therefore worth deciding on your preferred focus first: Are you looking for culture and water-based experiences, are you interested in observing nature, or would you like to combine different trails and landscapes?

Sandusky: Museums, Carousels and Maritime History

In Sandusky, you can include Cedar Point in your travel plans. The Roger Johnson Nature Center complements this outing with educational spaces and permanently installed areas for live animals. Those who want to learn about the history of the city and county will find a suitable focus at the Sandusky History Museum in the Follett House. The museum tells the story of Sandusky across four floors. From the rooftop observation walkway, the Widow’s Walk, you can look out over downtown Sandusky and Sandusky Bay.

The Merry-Go-Round Museum offers unusual insights. On display are hand-carved figures, historic band organs and rare artifacts relating to the history of American carousels. The museum was established in 1990 in Sandusky’s historic former post office, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Maritime Museum of Sandusky, by contrast, focuses on passenger shipping, commercial fishing, ice harvesting, boatbuilding, Ohio wetlands, shipwrecks and Sandusky’s role in the history of the Underground Railroad. Visitors can board Lyman boats there and view other watercraft on display.

Waterways, Islands and Special Landscapes

Jet Express ferries run from downtown Sandusky to Put-in-Bay, Kelleys Island and Cedar Point. The crossings take between 5 and 45 minutes. Kelleys Island is also known for its many restored houses, numerous examples of which are more than 150 years old. This allows you to vary your plans between museum visits, water-based experiences and historic architecture without mixing the individual interests.

The county’s nature destinations also offer distinct experiences. Erie MetroParks maintains 14 public parks and recreation areas with more than 30 miles of trails. Eagle Point is designated as a stop on the Lake Erie Birding Trail and has an observation platform from which bald eagles, ducks and other waterfowl can be spotted. The Joseph Steinen Wildlife Area protects a 155-acre freshwater marshland with adjoining upland areas. At Castalia Quarry MetroPark, you can see an observation platform with panoramic views of Sandusky Bay and the Lake Erie Islands; the park also contains fossils that are 400 million years old.

Trails for Different Travel Days

Several clearly distinct options are available for walks and longer periods outdoors. Edison Woods MetroPark has approximately six miles of forest and prairie trails. Horseback riding is also permitted there; it is the only park in the system where this is allowed. At Osborn MetroPark, hiking trails and the Discovery Trail lead through the grounds. A nine-basket disc golf course is located in the northern meadows.

The James H. McBride Arboretum is home to more than 200 species of flowers, trees and shrubs. Approximately half a mile of paved walking paths runs around Parker Lake. The horticultural and natural landscape features offer opportunities for education, enrichment and recreation. At Hoffman Forest MetroPark, grass trails lead through old-growth forests and stream habitats. Seasonal fishing in Old Woman Creek is possible there with a valid fishing license.

Those who prefer river landscapes can walk along the Huron River Path and view the Huron River from the Kara Deering Bridge. Coupling MetroPark is located on an undisturbed floodplain of the Huron River. In early spring, the trails there offer the opportunity to see Virginia bluebells along the riverbank. Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve encompasses 465 acres of shoreline along Lake Erie with a diverse mix of habitats. Old Woman Creek State Nature Preserve is protected both as a State Nature Preserve and as a National Estuarine Research Reserve.

The Right Base for Planning Your Trip

If museums, Cedar Point and the Jet Express ferries are to be the main focus, your search for a vacation rental should initially center on Sandusky. For days spent in nature, however, the trails, preserves and viewpoints may be the deciding factors. Another historical perspective is offered by the Lake Shore Electric Trail: It is connected to the former Lake Shore Electric Railway, an electric interurban railway that connected Cleveland with Toledo until 1939; the section in question extends for 1.2 miles.

For further regional orientation, you can also consider Sandusky, Vermilion and Huron. This allows you to align your accommodation search with the experiences that matter most to you during your trip to Erie County.
