Between the Greenway Trail, Parks and Lakes

Columbiana County combines expansive landscapes with industrial history, museums and special destinations. Those planning a trip with nature experiences and cultural discoveries will find a variety of themes for days spent together here. When choosing a vacation rental, it may be helpful to first decide whether hiking trails, landscapes, history or a varied sightseeing program should be the focus.

The Little Beaver Creek Greenway Trail runs between the villages of Lisbon and Leetonia along the former Erie Lackawanna Railway right-of-way in Salem and Center Townships. The trail is 12 miles long and passes through glacial outwash plains, upland fields, mature wooded ravines and wetlands with wildlife habitats. The trail is also connected to the Great Ohio Lake to River Greenway. This makes it a clear focus for anyone who wants to plan their trip around a longer route and changing landscapes.

Hellbender Bluff Park offers more than five miles of hiking and walking trails with views of wildflowers, songbirds, butterflies, open fields and Hellbender Bluff. The park covers 732 acres and spans the West Fork of Little Beaver Creek. Guilford Lake State Park offers a different landscape: The area covers around 1,600 acres and includes a lake that enables a variety of recreational activities. At Beaver Creek State Park, visible remains of the Sandy and Beaver Canal have been preserved, including old canal locks and markers.

Pottery, Industrial History and Museums

In East Liverpool, the Museum of Ceramics explores the region’s rich pottery history. Life-size dioramas illustrate traditional pottery production with a jigger workshop, a kiln, a decorating workshop and a salesroom. The museum is housed in East Liverpool’s former United States Post Office, a representative Beaux-Arts-style building listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Sightseeing plans can also be organized around specific dates. The Museum of Ceramics holds art classes every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon. Guided tours are also offered during regular museum hours and must be arranged at least one week in advance. Anyone wishing to include this focus in their trip should prepare their sightseeing plans accordingly.

In Leetonia, the Beehive Coke Ovens recall the area’s industrial past. The Leetonia Beehive Coke Ovens received a historic marker from the Ohio Historical Society in 1999. In Lisbon, the fully restored John Bishop House can be found. It is now owned by the City of Lisbon and operated by the Historical Society as a museum and educational center. In early spring, the house offers cooking classes for adults over an open hearth. Local history and hands-on cultural activities thus complement the landscape experiences.

Art, Routes and Different Travel Ideas

Salem offers another perspective on the region. A trolley tour visits locations and buildings that inspired Charles Burchfield’s paintings and stops at the Burchfield Homestead Society Museum. There, guests can tour the artist’s home. Nearly half of Burchfield’s artistic life’s work was created at the Burchfield Homestead Museum. For active variety, there is also an 18-hole disc golf course that hosts the annual Scenic Vista Challenge tournament.

The county’s location along well-known routes is also part of its character: Columbiana County lies along the Lincoln Highway and the Ohio Scenic River Byway. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore use your preferred types of excursions as a guide and give different weight to nature, cultural history, art or recreational activities. Additional ideas for places to visit can be found in Wellsville, Salem and East Liverpool.
