Warrensburg: Forest, History, and Distinctive Traditions
Accommodation in Warrensburg
Warrensburg combines experiences in nature with local history and an unusual selling tradition. The museum spans the period from prehistory to the present; alongside it, the Warrensburgh Historical Society has developed walking tours and driving tours. Foundations of former production mills are visible along the Schroon River. There is also the three-day World's Largest Garage Sale, a tradition dating back to 1979. When looking for a vacation rental, you can consider whether nature, history, or a specific event date should be the focus of your trip.
Forest and Activities in Pack Forest
Within the Town of Warrensburg, the mostly level, one-mile-long Grandmother's Tree Nature Trail in Pack Forest winds through an old-growth forest of hemlocks and white pines. The trail includes one of New York State's historic trees. Pack Forest also offers opportunities for paddling, fishing, picnicking, and mountain biking. This gives you a choice of different kinds of outdoor activities.
The recreation map with trail and activity information was created in February 2016. Check current access and trail conditions before visiting.
Local History at the Museum and on Tours
The Warrensburgh Museum of Local History was founded in 1975 as a Bicentennial project and is a joint initiative of the Warrensburgh Historical Society and the Town of Warrensburg. It tells the story of the Adirondack town from prehistory to the present. Exhibits cover geology, industry, community life, and local traditions—from the character of the region to its social life.
The Warrensburgh Historical Society has developed four walking tours and two driving tours highlighting more than 400 historic sites in Warrensburg and the surrounding areas. One of them, the Warrensburgh Heritage Trail Walking Tour 1, runs from Plank Bridge along Main Street, Richards Avenue, River Street, and Ridge Avenue to Judd Bridge, then back to Main Street. Plank Bridge is both the starting and ending point. The tours therefore differ in both format and scope; Tour 1 offers a specifically described route through Warrensburg.
Within the Town of Warrensburg, the visitor center at the Warren County Fish Hatchery offers an educational video about the fish hatchery's year-round operations, educational exhibits, a self-guided tour, and information about fish stocking. This adds another perspective on fish production to the topics of local history and forest.
Selling Tradition and Mill History
The World's Largest Garage Sale is a Warrensburg tradition dating back to 1979 and takes place across Warrensburg over three days. Vendors line Main Street; residents hold yard sales on almost every side street. Admission is free. If you would like to plan your trip around the sale, check the specific event dates when making your plans.
The local farmers market is held at Riverfront Farmers Market Park. The park is located on the Schroon River at the former site of Warrensburgh's historic production mills. Some foundations still remain and are visible today. Here, the present-day park and visible traces of the former mills come together.
Winter Activities and Trip Planning
Hackensack Mountain Park offers opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at the foot of the mountain trail. Local weather can affect these activities, and conditions may change.
When looking for a vacation rental, a useful starting point is the focus of your trip: local history at the museum and on walking tours, or experiences in nature at Pack Forest and Hackensack Mountain Park.
