Cohocton: Festivals, River Trails and History
Accommodation in Cohocton
A stay in Cohocton can focus on a variety of interests: the annual Fall Foliage Festival brings together market stalls and a parade, trails in the Lawrence Parks Recreation Area run along the Cohocton River and through wooded areas, and a piece of local history can be discovered on Maple Avenue. If you’re looking for a vacation rental in Cohocton, it helps to first consider which of these experiences you’d like to shape your stay.
Fall Foliage Festival: Stalls and Parade
Cohocton’s annual Fall Foliage Festival began in 1966. Arts and crafts stalls, a flea market, antiques, and food are among the offerings. The stalls are located on the Town and Village Greens at 15 South Main Street in Cohocton. This makes the visit all about the market: you can browse arts and crafts and antiques, check out the flea market stalls, or explore the food offerings.
A parade is scheduled for Saturday during the festival. If you plan your visit around it, you’ll have another event to look forward to in addition to the stalls. The market and parade are part of the festival, while the trails and historic sites appeal to other interests. This distinction can help you decide whether a festival visit or another focus is a better fit for your trip.
Trails Along the River and Through Wooded Areas
Trails in the Lawrence Parks Recreation Area run along the Cohocton River and through a wooded area. This brings together two distinct landscape experiences within the described recreation area: the river as a companion along the trails and the woods as another part of the surroundings. If you enjoy spending time outdoors, you can consider these trails as a focus for your stay.
The pavilions in the Lawrence Parks Recreation Area offer another way to spend time in the park: three pavilions are available to rent. Contact the Town Clerk for information about availability. The pavilions are a separate rental option in the park and are not the same as looking for a vacation rental. If you’re considering both for your trip, check pavilion availability with the Town Clerk.
An Active Weekend and Local History
All Out Paintball offers another recreational option, with open “walk-on” paintball games on weekends. In this format, you play with other players who are there. This differs from a walk along the trails in the Lawrence Parks Recreation Area and is suited to visitors who want to include paintball as an activity during their stay.
A building at 14 Maple Avenue also tells part of Cohocton’s history. T. S. Crosby built it around 1882; it housed the Crosby Furniture Store and the village undertaking rooms. The Cohocton Historical Society acquired the building in 1981. These changing uses give the place a tangible historical dimension: the building was associated both with a furniture store and with the village undertaking rooms, and was later acquired by the Historical Society.
