Discover Cedar Crest: Nature Experiences in the Sandia Mountains
Accommodation in Cedar Crest
Cedar Crest is located at the eastern foot of the Sandia Mountains in New Mexico. The town combines mountain landscapes, public hiking trails, and various opportunities for active exploration. Anyone looking for a vacation rental or vacation home can choose their accommodation based on whether hiking, cycling, natural history, or a horseback ride should be the focus.
Natural History and Trails in the Sandia Mountains
An important starting point is the Sandia Mountain Natural History Center. It is located in Cedar Crest on land owned by Albuquerque Public Schools and has been operating since 1967. The center offers ecological programs for the general public. This makes it a thematic starting point for anyone who wants to get to know the landscape not only while out and about, but also from a natural history perspective.
The grounds include approximately 7 miles of hiking trails. The trails pass through piñon-juniper forests, meadows, small canyons, ponderosa pine forests, and mixed conifer forests. Some sections of the trails are located in the Cibola National Forest and can be reached from public roads. Cedar Crest also has public hiking trails. When planning your day, it makes sense to choose between a walk through different forest and meadow landscapes and a longer hike along the trail system, without treating both options as the same route.
Combining Hiking, Horseback Riding, and History
The Sandia Mountains offer a historical dimension in addition to their landscapes. At the eastern foot, where Cedar Crest is located, there is archaeological continuity of human activity from the end of the last Ice Age to the present day. This historical span complements the immediate experience of nature and also makes the area interesting for travelers who want to combine landscape and culture.
Horseback rides are also offered in Cedar Crest. Cedar Crest Country Cottage and Stables is located on Snowline Road, half a mile from N.M. 14, and offers guided horseback rides lasting one to four hours in the Cibola National Forest. The different durations allow for a clear travel decision: You can fit a shorter outing into your day or plan a longer guided tour as an experience in its own right.
A Mountainous Choice for Cyclists
Cedar Crest can also be considered a starting point for road cycling. A road cycling route begins on the eastern side of the Sandia Mountains and climbs to the 10,678-foot summit of Sandia Peak. The road section from Cedar Crest toward Sandia Peak covers 15 to 17 miles. Take the length of the road section and the climb into account when planning your day.
From Cedar Crest, cyclists ride three to four miles, depending on where they park, to the intersection of N.M. 14 and N.M. 536. For families or groups with different interests, it can be helpful not to structure every active day in the same way: While some follow the nature trails, others may prefer a natural history program or a horseback ride.
Accommodation and Further Orientation
Cedar Crest has several bed-and-breakfast accommodations in a mountain setting. When searching for a vacation rental or vacation home, the main question is therefore which landscape and which experience should define your stay.
