The Towne of Historic Smithville is located in Smithville, New Jersey, on Route 9 near Moss Mill Road. The village brings together a former stagecoach stop, shops, walking paths, waterside activities, and events. Families looking to make their stay varied have plenty of concrete options, from browsing the shops to enjoying a carousel ride or a pedal-boat trip. Dining and culture are also defining aspects of Historic Smithville.

Stagecoach history and walks

Historic Smithville began as a simple, one-room stagecoach stop. Today, it has more than 50 specialty shops. Visitors who enjoy browsing will find that shopping is a clear focus, but the offerings go beyond retail. Visitors can stroll along cobblestone paths and cross pedestrian bridges. These paths create a distinctive setting for a walk, one that differs from a purely shopping-focused visit. The historic beginnings and today’s shops sit side by side: one tells the story of its origins as a stop, while the other reflects its wide range of specialty shops.

Village Greene and Lake Meone

Village Greene has a carousel. Visitors can relax by tranquil Lake Meone, and they can also take a pedal-boat ride on the lake. Families traveling with children can treat these as two distinct stops during a visit: the carousel at Village Greene and the experience out on the water. The lake also provides a distinctive setting for dining: the Historic Smithville Inn has dining areas with scenic views of Lake Meone. At Lake Meone, the natural setting and dining come together, without requiring a particular itinerary.

Dining and local events

Historic Smithville has six dining establishments. The Historic Smithville Inn has been in business since 1787. Fred and Ethel’s Lantern Light Tavern serves casual fare, while the Smithville Bakery offers breakfast daily, featuring specialties baked on site. Depending on your preference, you can choose between breakfast with baked goods, casual dining, and the Inn’s dining areas overlooking the scenery at Lake Meone.

Events offer a range of different experiences, too. The annual Art Walk takes place in Smithville Village and features more than 75 artists. The Historic Smithville Irish Festival features traditional Celtic music, Irish dancers, and bagpipers. The festival takes place in October for the 22nd time on Village Greene in Galloway, New Jersey. The Historic Smithville Italian Festival, in turn, features 15 food vendors and three wine vendors offering wine tastings. Visitors looking to make art, music, or culinary offerings the focus of their visit can consider these events separately, rather than treating them as the same as everyday browsing in the shops.
