North Platte combines the history of the American West with railroad culture, river scenery, and a variety of experiences. At Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park, you can visit Buffalo Bill Cody’s restored home and barn, while the Golden Spike Tower reveals the scale of Bailey Yard, a major railroad hub. There are also museums, trails, water activities, and events, allowing you to plan your trip according to your family’s interests.

Ranch History and Regional Culture

The grounds of Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park are open year-round from 8 a.m. until sunset. You can visit the mansion on self-guided tours from late spring through early fall; outside this period, visits are possible only by appointment. The park also displays numerous memorabilia items related to Cody.

Scout’s Rest Ranch is designated as a National Historic Landmark. This designation is connected to William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody’s significant role in the emergence of the Wild West entertainment movement in the late 19th century. At the Western Heritage Village at the Lincoln County Historical Museum, the restored buildings range from a Pony Express log cabin dating to the 1860s to a country church from 1917. The museum also focuses on the North Platte Canteen, which served more than 6.5 million female and male soldiers and other military personnel from December 25, 1941, to April 1, 1946.

Railroad Experiences for Different Age Groups

The Golden Spike Tower offers a view of Union Pacific’s Bailey Yard, considered the largest railroad classification yard in the world. Multimedia exhibits there cover railroad history, orphan trains, and the North Platte WWII Canteen. At the Cody Park Railroad Museum, you can see the only publicly displayed steam locomotive of the Challenger 3900 class in the world. Visitors can board locomotive No. 3977, take the engineer’s perspective, and explore historic railroad cars such as a mail car and a caboose.

During the annual North Platte Rail Days, exclusive guided bus tours through Bailey Yard are offered. If you would like to plan your trip around an event schedule, NEBRASKAland Days is another option: In North Platte, it lasts ten days every June and includes a PRCA rodeo, country concerts, and a parade.

Trails, Water, and Wildlife Watching

For active days, the 5-mile Buffalo Bill Trail runs along Buffalo Bill Road and connects to Scouts Rest Ranch north of Highway 30. In the area south of North Platte, Potter’s Pasture offers nearly 100 miles of trails across 1,200 acres of hills and canyons. Nearby, six miles south of North Platte, Lake Maloney offers opportunities for boating, fishing, water sports, camping, wildlife watching, and disc golf.

The North Platte River can also be experienced in a variety of ways. Dusty Trails offers rides in a stock tank, on inner tubes, and in canoes or kayaks. Buffalo Bill State Historical Park and Recreation Area also has riding camps and trail rides for riders of all ages and experience levels. More than 600,000 sandhill cranes spend about six weeks in the North Platte River Valley. There, you can watch the birds roost at night and set out each day to search for food.

Cody Park is located on the North Platte River and includes a drive-through zoo with deer, elk, donkeys, llamas, geese, and peacocks. The park also features a wildlife sanctuary, sports facilities, an outdoor swimming pool, campgrounds, and picnic areas.

North Platte as a Starting Point for Your Trip

If you are traveling with children, you can include the North Platte Area Children’s Museum in your plans. It is located in the historic Carnegie Library building in downtown North Platte and offers an interactive, immersive play experience for children of all ages. For a break between excursions, the Canteen District downtown combines restaurants and diverse cuisine with boutique shopping, entertainment, and other offerings.

When looking for a vacation rental in North Platte, it is therefore worthwhile to decide on your preferred travel style first: Culture enthusiasts can focus on ranch and railroad history, active travelers on trails, horseback riding, and water activities, while families can consider the Children’s Museum, Cody Park, and the events. This allows you to choose accommodation as a suitable base for the experiences that should define your trip.
