Merriam Woods highlights a specific natural area: a 40-acre section of the Lewis Family, Dean, Anna Mae and David D. Lewis Memorial Conservation Area lies within the community. The Conservation Area covers a total of 362 acres. Its habitats include upland fields, bottomland fields, bottomland forest, glades, savannas, and woodland. Alongside this landscape, hiking and fishing are specific interests: a 3.3-mile out-and-back trail leads from the parking lot to Bull Creek; several fish species are listed for fishing in the area.

Landscape and Trails

Upland and bottomland fields distinguish the fields by their location; bottomland forest, woodland, glades, and savannas add to the range of habitats. The Conservation Area therefore includes both open and wooded habitats. Those interested in landscapes will find several named habitat types rather than just a single focus: fields in different locations, glades, and woodland are included, as are bottomland forest and savannas.

There is a specifically described out-and-back hike: it is 3.3 miles long, starts at the parking lot, and leads to Bull Creek. The creek itself runs for about half a mile through the southern part of the Conservation Area. These two distances describe different things: the 3.3 miles refers to the trail, while about half a mile refers to the course of Bull Creek within the southern area. This makes it possible to distinguish the trail distance from the length of the creek section.

Fishing and Water Destinations

The fish listed for fishing in the Conservation Area are white bass, rock bass, sunfish, catfish, crappie, and largemouth bass. Silver Creek Lake, a 9-acre fishing lake, is also near Merriam Woods. Lake Taneycomo lies south of Merriam Woods and is considered one of the best trout-fishing waters in the United States. Merriam Woods is north of Rockaway Beach. The Lake Front Public Park is in nearby Rockaway Beach; it has a free fishing pier that is fully ADA accessible.

The fishing destinations offer different highlights: fish species for angling are listed for the Conservation Area, Silver Creek Lake is a fishing lake in its own right, and Lake Taneycomo is particularly associated with trout fishing. The fishing pier at Lake Front Public Park provides another point of interest in Rockaway Beach, explicitly described as ADA accessible.
