Trails between the lakeshore and challenging routes

The Table Rock Lakeshore Trail is 2.50 miles each way and rated easy. It follows the shore of Table Rock Lake from the State Park Marina to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Dewey Short Visitor Center next to the dam. The distance is given one way—a helpful distinction when planning your hiking day.

The White River Valley Trail System offers a different kind of experience: It is 11.30 miles long and rated difficult. The White River Valley Trail is for hikers and mountain bikers looking for a challenging experience. Its scenic sections include small waterfalls, views of Table Rock Lake and Taneycomo Lake, and an abandoned farm. Its length and rating clearly set this trail apart from the easier-rated Lakeshore Trail.

A 6.6-mile out-and-back trail begins at the parking lot on the western edge of Pilot Knob Conservation Area, along Highway 39. Wire Road Conservation Area lies in northwestern Stone County and covers 1,003 acres. Its multi-use trails are intended for hikers, cyclists, and horseback riders. The landscape also has historical significance: A branch of the Cherokee Trail of Tears passed through the area.

Ancient junipers and protected landscapes

Ashe Juniper Natural Area is managed to protect a unique, dry limestone and dolomite woodland dominated by Ashe junipers. The trees in the ancient juniper stand have been dated to between 350 and 500 years old. For nature enthusiasts, the area combines a distinctive habitat with the remarkable age of its trees. This makes it a different kind of nature destination from the trails’ distances and lakeside views.

Water, nature programs, and cave tours

The State Park Marina at Table Rock State Park rents ski boats and paddleboards. The park also offers a seasonal naturalist who leads programs on plants, animals, and ecosystems, as well as nature walks. Talking Rocks Cavern offers guided cave walks on paved concrete paths. During the tours, guides explain the cave’s history and geology. Local history and a distinctive character for your trip

In Galena, the Y-Bridge was built in 1926–1927 and became a local landmark. Fishing with inner tubes on the James River and the White River is also part of the region’s recreational history. It developed into a popular tourist activity, and Galena earned a reputation as the “capital of inner tube fishing.”

The Stone County Historical/Genealogical Society Museum researches, preserves, and shares stories and artifacts about Stone County, Missouri, before Table Rock Lake. The museum also has satellite exhibits in Hurley, Kimberling City, Galena, and Reeds Spring.
