Ste. Genevieve combines preserved architectural history with a museum, events, and a wine trail through limestone hills. The National Historic Landmark District contains dozens of buildings from the 18th and early 19th centuries. This offers a view that ranges from individual homes to the historic district as a whole. Which aspect you focus on can shape the pace of your trip: architecture and local history, an event date, or outdoor activities.

Historic Homes and Distinctive Building Styles

The Bauvais-Amoureux House was built in 1792 for Jean-Baptiste Bauvais. It is one of only three known surviving homes in the poteaux-en-terre building style in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri. The Jean Baptiste Vallé House was built in 1794 for one of the last commanders of Ste. Genevieve. It is one of the many surviving homes built using vertical log construction in the historic center.

The two buildings represent different architectural features: the Bauvais-Amoureux House is notable for its rare surviving building style, while the Vallé House showcases vertical log construction, which is also represented in the historic center. The district also preserves narrow streets, historic buildings, and fenced gardens. Architecture enthusiasts can consider these details alongside the homes’ histories as part of a broader historic streetscape.

Museum Perspectives and Event Dates

At the Sainte Genevieve Museum Learning Center, the Ste. Genevieve Gallery presents the town’s history from the perspectives of Indigenous residents, German settlers, and Italian prisoners of war. The Center is also the official Missouri Dinosaur Visitor Site. Alongside architectural history, the town thus offers a range of historical perspectives and a dedicated focus on dinosaurs.

The 4th Friday Art Walk takes place in Historic Downtown Ste. Genevieve from February through November, on the fourth Friday of each month between 6 and 9 p.m. Check the specific dates before your trip. The French Heritage Festival features living history and live music. Jour de Fête takes place every year on the second full weekend in August; checking the latest event dates can help with planning here as well. The monthly Art Walk and the annual festival therefore offer different time-based anchors for a stay.

Wine Trail, Cycling, and Water

The Route Du Vin Wine Trail winds through the limestone hills of Ste. Genevieve and invites you to walk from vineyard to winery. Individual businesses and their schedules may change. Cyclists can explore quiet roads and riverside paths. These options appeal to different interests: a walk between vineyard and winery, or an exploration by bicycle.

River Rapids Waterpark at the Y offers another activity. The facility includes several tall tube water slides, a lazy river, and a 25-meter lap pool with six lanes. It also has a zip line, climbing ropes, and a diving board, as well as a children’s area with 30 different activities. Operations are seasonal and may change. If the water park is an important part of your trip, take its seasonal operations into account when choosing your dates.

Coordinate Your Itinerary and Accommodation

When choosing a vacation rental, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: should the architectural history of the historic district take center stage, would you like to plan around an event date, or are you especially interested in the wine trail and cycling? The seasonal water park is another option that may influence your choice of dates.

If you are traveling from southern Illinois, you can cross the Mississippi River on the Ste. Genevieve-Modoc Ferry to reach Ste. Genevieve. Check ferry schedules and fares before you travel. Along with the specific dates for the Art Walk and Jour de Fête, this information can help you coordinate your arrival and stay with the activities you have planned.
