Discover Chula through specific chapters of its local history: the development of the railroad and livestock shipping alongside the history of several churches. The Chula Street Fair adds a recurring event to your travel planning. You can decide whether to plan your stay around the fair or get to know Chula mainly through its historical stories.

Railroads and Livestock Shipping

The Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad was completed through the Chula area in 1886. Chula’s livestock yards were built in 1891. For many years, Chula was the most important livestock shipping station on the Milwaukee Road between Ottumwa and Kansas City. Together, these milestones show the expansion of the railroad line and the importance of livestock shipping to local history.

The former passenger service can also be described with a specific figure: four passenger trains once stopped daily at the Milwaukee depot. The depot was later demolished. A railroad station with a brick platform was built near Chula in 1891; this depot has not survived either. Both stories belong to the area’s railroad past, but refer to different stations.

During the early settlement period, a freight car served as a station for two or three years. A 1937 county history describes this temporary arrangement. Later, trucks replaced some rail freight service. The sequence runs from the makeshift station through freight and passenger service to the partial replacement of rail freight service by trucks.

Churches and Local History

The founding, construction, and dedication of the churches each tell a different part of the story. The Presbyterian Church of Chula was founded on January 26, 1892. Its building was constructed in 1895 at the corner of Mansur and Broaddus.

The history of the Chula Baptist Church begins in 1895 with a meeting on March 17, when people gathered to organize a Missionary Baptist church. Two days later, they decided to call it “The Chula Baptist Church.” The new Chula Baptist Church building was dedicated on August 8, 1896. This sequence shows how the organization of the congregation, the choice of its name, and a later building milestone occurred at different times.

Chula’s newspaper also forms part of the local history: it was originally called “Chula Home Press.” The Community Center, built in 1975, adds a much later construction date to the timeline. Together with the railroad and church dates, these milestones span the late 19th century through the second half of the 20th century.

Street Fair and Travel Planning

The Chula Street Fair is held annually. Check the date and program for your travel year before planning your stay around the event. This makes the fair a specific reason to plan a trip without assuming that a program from another year will apply.

When looking for a vacation rental in Chula, start by asking what you want to focus on during your trip: Should the Street Fair set the dates, or would you rather explore the railroad and church history? The date of the fair depends on the year; for a history-focused visit, the timeline offers several distinct topics. Plan your trip around whichever reason interests you most.
