Hermann combines the history of German settlement with experiences along the Missouri River and a distinctive wine culture. Between historic buildings, museums, walks and tastings, you can choose different ways to shape your stay.

Buildings Tell Hermann’s Story

Hermann was founded by the German Settlement Society of Philadelphia. Several buildings at the Deutschheim State Historic Site date from 1840 to 1890 and reflect the era when Germans first settled the Missouri Valley. Built in 1840, the Pommer-Gentner House is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the city. It offers a tangible example through which to explore Hermann’s architectural history.

The Historic Hermann Museum also focuses on the history and heritage of the area. It is housed in the German School building, built in 1871. Among other topics, the collections cover the immigration of settlers to Hermann from the 1830s through the early 20th century. The tower clock offers a special connection between the building and an exhibit: it has been in continuous operation since 1890, and its mechanism is on display in the museum.

The Hermann Fire Company Museum tells another chapter of the town’s history. Exhibits include the hand-pumper fire engines Consequence and Washington, a 1935 Chevrolet quad truck, and uniforms, trumpets and working drums from 1865. Architectural history, immigration and firefighting history thus offer distinct ways to explore the past.

Riverfront, Walks and Bike Trail

Hermann Riverfront Park is downtown on the Missouri River. The River Memorial combines an interactive tribute to the history of life along the river with information panels and views of the water. These offer two different ways to make the river part of your stay: a park on the riverbank and an account of life along the river.

There are several routes to choose from for a walk. An easy walk through the park and surrounding neighborhood includes the octagonal Rotunda Building. The self-guided Bayer Walking Tour, by contrast, starts at Hermannhof Winery and heads uphill in a straight line along Gutenberg Street. The routes differ clearly in their course and elevation, so you can plan each experience separately.

For cyclists, the Missouri River Bridge has a protected bike lane about 8 feet wide. It provides safe access to the Katy Trail. The trail access and walking routes offer different ways to include some activity in your stay.

Wine, Tours and Independent Exploration

The Hermann Wine Trail includes six family-owned wineries in the Hermann, Missouri area. Daily wine tastings are available year-round. Six Wine Trail events featuring wine and food pairings are also held throughout the year. Tastings and food-pairing events offer different opportunities to explore the region’s wine.

Hermannhof Winery has a tasting room for Hermann wines, with views of cellars and buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Stone Hill Winery offers free daily guided tours of the largest contiguous cellar complex in North America. Tours of the 1847 Teubner-Husmann House, the 12,000-square-foot German-style stone barn and the 19th-century Rasche Homestead at Hermann Farm are available by appointment.

If you prefer to set your own pace, you can take a self-guided tour of First Settlement Village at Hermann Farm. It includes the Schuetzenhalle, the 1790s Trading Post, the Trades Barn and the 4-Square Garden. A tour of the Hermann Farm Distillery can be booked; tastings and cocktails are available on the outdoor patio. Guided and self-guided options differ in how you plan your outing and which buildings or topics you focus on.

Find the Right Vacation Rental for Your Plans

When looking for a vacation rental in Hermann, start with the experiences that matter most to you. Historic homes and museums offer a different focus from riverside walks, the Katy Trail or wine tastings. If you want to combine several interests, the different formats can help you plan your days—for example, pairing a self-guided walk with a tour, or a museum visit with an outing to the wineries. Tours at Hermann Farm are available by appointment; check specific dates before making your plans.
