Upton: Hiking, Water and History
Accommodation in Upton
Upton offers several ways to spend time outdoors or exploring local history: hiking trails wind through natural areas managed by the town, Heritage Park has trails and access to Mill Pond, and swimming is available at Pratt Pond. There is also a museum with guided tours and an athenaeum with historical materials. This gives you a choice of different ways to focus your stay, on nature, water, or culture.
Hiking Through Natural Areas
Hike Upton offers ten hikes through natural areas managed by the Town of Upton. This gives you several ways to plan a hike as a separate part of your stay. Anyone who completes six Hike Upton hikes receives a Hike Upton pin or patch. Completing six hikes is also a specific challenge for anyone who enjoys including several hikes in their trip.
Visitors can hike in Upton State Forest. The forest covers 2,660 acres, about 2,275 of which are in Upton. It brings together nature and history, making it a distinctive option for a stay where you want to combine time outdoors with an interest in the past. The figures distinguish the forest's total area from the portion located in Upton.
Another named trail connection is in the Whitney Conservation Area: the east–west Porier Path connects Upton State Forest with the Warren Brook Watershed Conservation Area. If you are interested in trail routes and connections between natural areas, this specific route is a useful reference.
Mill Pond and Swimming
Heritage Park has hiking trails and access to Mill Pond. The same park preserves a historic stone chamber near the eastern shore of Mill Pond. This brings together two distinct interests: getting out on the trails and visiting a place with historical character. The chamber’s location is described precisely: it is near the pond’s eastern shore.
If you would also like to go swimming in Upton, swimming is available at Kiwanis Beach on Pratt Pond. Along with the trails at Heritage Park and the hikes offered by Hike Upton, this offers a different way to plan your day than focusing on local history. When planning, you can first decide whether you mainly want to hike, spend time by the water, or combine different interests.
Museum and Historical Collections
The Upton History Museum offers guided tours. It is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon, as well as by appointment. Admission to the Upton Museum is free. If a guided tour is important to your stay, you can take the listed opening hours and the option of visiting by appointment into account when planning.
The athenaeum includes documents, maps, and newspapers, as well as a catalog of historic buildings and houses. It also contains photographs, tools, clothing and textiles, and other archival materials. This range gives you an idea of the types of historical documents and objects held by the athenaeum. For visitors interested in local history, it offers a different experience from hiking or spending time by the water.
Upton Heritage Day also celebrates the town’s cultural and agricultural heritage: on September 27, 2025, the one-day event was dedicated to this theme at several locations.
