Iberia Parish: Discover Bayou, Culture, and Cuisine
Accommodation in Iberia Parish
Iberia Parish brings together experiences centered on food production and local history, along with birdwatching, water activities, and festivals. Highlights range from a self-guided TABASCO® Factory Tour to a historic rice mill, and from regional museum exhibits to events with distinct themes. When planning your trip, consider what you want to experience first: a set weekend in October calls for different scheduling than a stay focused on museums, nature, or water sports.
Crafts, Architecture, and Local History
The self-guided TABASCO® Factory Tour introduces the history and production process of TABASCO® Sauce. The Avery Island Fan Experience also includes a self-guided tour of the TABASCO® Brand Museum. The Conrad Rice Mill tells a different story of production: built in 1912, it has been in continuous operation ever since. Its tour uses a model to explain the milling process, from receiving rough rice through to packaging the finished milled rice. The function of the machinery is also explained. Confirm current tour details before your trip.
The Joseph Jefferson Mansion was built in 1870. The Victorian mansion has a fourth-floor cupola and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Tours of the mansion and gardens begin on the hour every day of the week, between 10:00 and 16:00. Check the current schedule before your visit.
The Bayou Teche Museum presents local cultures, artists, industries, and traditions through interactive exhibits. A floating dock for kayaks and canoes is just a few steps from the museum. Shadows-on-the-Teche highlights a different aspect of history: the former plantation home is also connected to the history of the hundreds of enslaved men, women, and children who lived and worked there.
At the Jeanerette Museum, a swamp area with a large mural and specimens of more than 40 native bird, animal, and aquatic species offers a glimpse into the natural world. The museum also covers the history of the sugarcane industry, from planting to harvest. The Jeanerette Bicentennial Park and Museum is another architectural landmark: it was built from cypress wood in 1902.
Birdlife and Water Activities
Jungle Gardens maintains a protected bird colony where conservation efforts provide habitat for thousands of birds. More than 260 bird species live on Jefferson Island. Birdwatchers and photographers visit Rip’s Rookery, where migratory birds come to nest. These two birdwatching experiences offer different highlights: a protected colony at Jungle Gardens and birding at Rip’s Rookery.
Those interested in activities on the water can fish, crab, water-ski, windsurf, and sail at Cypremort Point State Park. The options range from observing nature to active water sports, so you don’t have to focus your trip on a single theme.
Festivals and Special Reasons to Visit
The annual Tour du Teche Canoe Race covers 135 miles along Bayou Teche, with one section running through Iberia Parish. The race is open to canoes, kayaks, and pirogues, takes place on the first full weekend in October, and is accompanied by evening festivals at each stop. The World Championship Gumbo Cookoff is a family-oriented food festival in the historic downtown of New Iberia. It takes place every second weekend in October. If either of these October events is central to your trip, check the specific dates before planning.
Other events have their own distinct themes: El Festival Espanol de Nueva Iberia celebrates New Iberia’s founding by the Spanish, while the Louisiana Sugar Cane Festival celebrates Louisiana’s sugarcane industry. Books Along the Teche Literary Festival features symposia, children’s activities, workshops, a book fair, a readers’ theater, live music, and local cuisine.
An individual farm tour can also be part of your plans: Gonsoulin Land and Cattle offers tours and excursions for school classes or groups by appointment. Arrange your visit in advance.
Trip Planning and Vacation Rentals
When choosing a vacation rental in Iberia Parish, it helps to decide on the reason for your trip first. For a festival, the event dates matter; for a visit to the Joseph Jefferson Mansion, check the hourly tour schedule, while farm tours require an advance appointment. If you don’t have a single event in mind, you can plan your trip around your interests, such as production history, museums, birdwatching, or water activities.
