Woodford County: Horse Experiences and Rolling Landscapes
Accommodation in Woodford County
Woodford County can be discovered through a wide variety of experiences: you can watch horses training on tours, cycle along paved routes through rolling landscapes, or enjoy seasonal offerings at an orchard. Guided distillery visits and a wooded loop trail add their own distinctive touches. When choosing your vacation rental, it’s worth first considering which of these outings you want to be the focus of your trip.
Guided Visits and Insights into the World of Horses
Woodford Reserve Distillery offers a variety of tours and tasting experiences year-round. The tour route is wheelchair accessible. Self-guided tours and unsupervised wandering are not permitted. The visit is therefore clearly focused on guided experiences; if you’re interested in production and tastings, you can include these offerings in your travel plans.
Two farm tours also offer insights into working with racehorses, but they follow different itineraries. WinStar Farm’s seasonal Morning Shuttle Tour takes guests by electric shuttle to the private training center. There, they can watch horses training and learn the basics of racehorse training. At Airdrie Stud, the tour begins in the Stallion Barn, then continues by personal vehicle to the mares and foals. There may be an opportunity to interact directly with the broodmare herd. For both tours, check dates and availability before booking.
Hills, Cycling Routes, and a Greenway Loop
Life Adventure Center is located in Central Kentucky on 575 acres in a hilly landscape. Woodford County’s quiet, well-paved cycling routes offer another perspective on the landscape. They pass through green pastures and rolling sections, by stone walls, rivers, streams, and horse and cattle farms. Those who enjoy cycling will find a different focus here than on the guided farm tours. A public bicycle repair station is located in Midway at the intersection of Main Street and South Gratz Street.
For a shorter outing on foot, Big Spring Park offers an approximately three-quarter-mile paved loop through a wooded area. This makes it easy to distinguish a bike ride through open countryside from a walk along a single park trail.
Water Activities and Active Days
Falling Springs Center has an indoor eight-lane swimming pool, a therapy pool, and an outdoor splash pool. Since pool operations are seasonal, check the hours before your visit. The center offers day passes for youth and adults. Paying visitors can also take part in more than 35 weekly fitness classes on land and in the water; class schedules may change. The pools, day passes, and classes offer different ways to plan an active stay without making any one activity the focus of the entire outing.
Seasonal Experiences and Local History
Eckert’s Versailles Orchard combines seasonal produce with activities tied to particular times of year. Visitors can pick seasonal produce themselves; what’s available depends on the season. On select Friday and Saturday evenings in the fall, the orchard also offers spooky-themed hayrides included with admission. Dates vary from year to year, so check the current schedule before visiting.
The Huntertown Community Interpretive Park offers another cultural perspective. It explores the historical role of the Huntertown Community in Woodford County and Kentucky. This adds a look at the history of the local community to outings focused on landscapes, farms, and recreational activities.
Choosing the Right Vacation Rental for Your Travel Plans
These offerings have different focuses and conditions: some are available year-round, while others are seasonal or tied to specific tour dates. So, base your vacation rental search on the outings you actually want to take, and compare the location of a potential accommodation with your planned stops. For further orientation, you can also include Versailles in your travel plans.
