At the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, galleries and exhibitions showcase works by more than 800 Kentucky artisans. This brings together different ways to explore regional crafts and products in one place.

Berea College also offers a glimpse into how crafts are made. Berea College Student Craft has active workshops for ceramics, broom making, weaving, and woodworking. Professional artisans guide more than 75 students as they create handcrafted products. The college’s historic beginnings date to a one-room school founded in 1855. The historic campus includes Ladies Hall, the college’s first brick building. Berea has also been called the “Folk Arts and Crafts Capital of Kentucky.”

If you’d like to experience art beyond exhibitions, you can also watch studio artists at work in Berea. The Berea Public Art Tour features sculptures, fountains, stained glass, and historic architecture. Berea also offers crafts, as well as architectural and historical tours. Trails and Outdoor Activities

The John B. Stephenson Walking Trail marks the spot where Daniel Boone and 30 axmen crossed the creek in 1775. It starts at the Berea Municipal Utilities parking lot and is eventually planned to connect with the hiking trails on Indian Fort Mountain. Another Boone Trace trail was established along Brushy Fork Creek and incorporated into the city and college trail system. At Boone Gap, a historic site on the boundary between Rockcastle County and Madison County, visitors can see an actual section of the Boone Trace. The two sites offer different historical connections: one is part of a local trail network, while the other reveals a section of the Boone Trace. The Pinnacles are also part of the Berea College Forest. Owsley Fork is an option for kayaking, hiking, and birdwatching.

Richmond and Historic Sites

Downtown Richmond includes more than 100 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as three listed historic districts. Another important site in the region’s history is the Battle of Richmond grounds, where the second-largest Civil War battle in Kentucky took place. The Battle of Richmond Visitors Center and Museum provides an overview of the battle. A reenactment takes place every August; check the specific event dates when planning your visit.

White Hall connects architectural history with the story of Cassius Marcellus Clay, whose historic residence it was. The building was constructed in the late 18th century and significantly expanded in the 1860s. It is designed in the Georgian and Italianate styles. During a self-guided tour, interpretive signs explain the history of the house and the Clay family; artifacts, antique furniture, and photographs are also on display. Visits are available as part of the tour, but visitor access may vary by season. Check visiting arrangements in advance.
