Hazel Crest brings cultural and historical research together with a direct connection to the water: the South Suburban Genealogical & Historical Society operates a public reference and research library, while Dynasty Trails Park is located in the city on the banks of Cherry Creek. Other attractions include fishing season at Lake Owens and Dynasty Trails, as well as the METRA commuter rail system, which serves Hazel Crest. These themes lead to different kinds of day plans. Visitors who want to explore genealogy and history will plan differently from those setting aside time to fish during fishing season or coordinating their journeys with the commuter rail. When looking for a vacation rental, the timing of your trip, your planned priorities, and the specific location of the accommodation all play a role.

Local Genealogy and History

The society’s library is a free public reference and research library with 15,000 volumes. Its materials may only be used on-site and cannot be taken out of the building. If you want to research genealogy or history, plan to visit in person rather than read the materials later at your accommodation. The society holds monthly genealogy and history programs for the Chicago Southland; since program schedules may change, check current dates if a particular program is important to your stay. The society also publishes two issues of Where the Trails Cross each year.

To enter, go through the door at the far west end of the building and ring the doorbell at the library door.

Dynasty Trails Park and Seasonal Fishing

Dynasty Trails Park is located in Hazel Crest on the banks of Cherry Creek; its location offers a different focus from the cultural and historical attractions. Fishing season at Lake Owens and Dynasty Trails runs from April 1 through October 31. Hazel Crest Park District fishing permits are required at both locations. They are sold during regular business hours at the Park District Community Center. If fishing days are part of your itinerary, plan your travel dates around the season and include buying a permit in your preparations. Check the current rules and permit requirements before fishing, as availability and season information may change.

Commuter Rail and Choosing a Vacation Rental

Hazel Crest is served by the METRA commuter rail system. If the train affects your daily plans, check the current schedule before setting your travel dates. The three themes have different timing considerations: programs follow current dates, fishing is tied to the fishing season, and train travel depends on the schedule. So first decide whether your trip will focus on a particular program, seasonal fishing, or the commuter rail. Then you can assess the specific location of a vacation rental in relation to your planned visits.
