Villa Grove brings arts and crafts together with a distinctive pass history. Hundreds of handmade ceramic pieces and historic routes offer different points of interest, alongside local studios and traces of mining. Here, firsthand encounters with art meet the far-reaching history of routes and mining.

Ceramic Art and Studios

At Azul's adobe art house, visitors can view hundreds of handmade ceramic pieces. The variety of works makes ceramics a tangible way to experience local art and gives a visit a clear focus.

Some local artists have opened their homes and studios to visitors; some art houses offer private lessons. If you are specifically planning a studio visit or lesson, confirm the details in advance.

These are two different ways to experience art: Azul's adobe art house focuses on ceramic pieces, while private lessons at some art houses offer guided engagement with art. The history of local arts and crafts also has a specific date and place: Always Azul Pottery moved to Highway 285 in Villa Grove in 1996.

Hayden Pass and Route Planning

Hayden Pass lies just east of Villa Grove. In the 1870s, it was the main route to Villa Grove from the east. A high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicle with low range is recommended for Hayden Pass. Thus, two different considerations come into play: the pass's historical role and the vehicle recommendation for planning a trip today. Road conditions can change seasonally; check them before you drive.

From Villa Grove, you can reach the south parcel of Villa Grove State Trust Lands by traveling more than 3 miles along Hayden Pass Road (CR LL57), then 0.3 miles along northbound CR 60 MM. Everyone aged 16 and older needs a valid hunting or fishing license to access Villa Grove State Trust Lands. Check road conditions before driving, too.

Mining History in Visible Traces

The Shirley Site trailhead eventually leads to the historic Shirley mining camp. Little remains at the camp aside from a railroad embankment. This makes the site an example of how a mining history can be brought to life through just a few surviving traces.

For another look at traces of mining, visitors can see foundations, an ore-loading trestle, a railroad bed, and mining facilities at the former townsite of Orient. Access is connected to the Orient Land Trust route south of Villa Grove. Compared with Shirley mining camp, Orient has several specific structural and mining traces; the two sites thus differ in what remains visible of their history.

Choose a Vacation Rental Based on Your Travel Interests

When looking for a vacation rental, you can weigh a focus on art in town against a stay centered on routes. For Hayden Pass, the vehicle recommendation matters; for the south parcel, the route from Villa Grove and the license requirement for people aged 16 and older are specific planning considerations. You can choose where to stay based on whether you want to focus on art visits or include the pass and State Trust Lands in your trip.
