Sharp County: Nature, Rivers, and Local History
Accommodation in Sharp County
Sharp County invites you to explore nature and local history, each with its own focus: wooded areas and rare plants, a peaceful river landscape, scenic drives, and historic townscapes. As you plan your trip, consider which of these experiences interest you most. This can also help you choose a vacation rental that better suits your plans for each day.
Forests, Springs, and River Landscape
The Harold E. Alexander Spring River Wildlife Management Area covers 13,939 acres of wooded hardwood areas and clearings in the Ozark highlands. The Harold E. Alexander Nature and Leaf Trail is a 39-mile route around the area. Rock Creek Natural Area in Sharp County offers a different natural highlight: it has one of the highest concentrations of rare plants in Arkansas.
The Bubbling Springs Nature Trail passes through upland oak-hickory forests and several clearings before reaching Bubbling Springs. If you’d like to plan a leisurely river trip, the South Fork of the Spring River is a peaceful warm-water stream with scenic surroundings, well suited to leisurely float trips. Forests, rare plants, and the river offer distinct ways to spend your time—without every day needing to involve the same kind of outing.
The routes also offer different points of interest: the Spring River Country Nature and Leaf Trail is a 48-mile scenic drive that begins and ends in Hardy. By contrast, the 39-mile route of the Harold E. Alexander Nature and Leaf Trail loops around the Wildlife Management Area. You can compare a scenic drive that starts and ends in Hardy with a route focused on the landscape of the protected area.
Local History and Architecture
In 1995, the Hardy Downtown Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a well-preserved historic business district in Sharp County. Old Kia Kima is also part of Hardy’s history: the Boy Scouts of America summer camp operated from 1916 to 1964. It contributed substantially to tourism in Hardy and played an important role in the founding of nearby Cherokee Village.
Evening Shade has largely retained its late-19th-century rural historic character. The downtown area comprises 35 commercial buildings: ten made of stone, eight of wood-frame construction, eight of sheet metal, five of brick, and four of concrete block. These figures show the variety of materials in the town’s historic landscape, rather than reducing it to a single architectural style.
Individual buildings include the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, a historic landmark in Evening Shade. The Gothic Revival church was built between 1898 and 1899. The John W. Shaver House is considered the town’s oldest and most historically significant surviving building; the Coger House is architecturally significant to its built environment. Together, these examples offer insight into different aspects of local history: a church with a clearly stated construction period, a particularly significant surviving house, and another architecturally important building.
Events Throughout the Year
Hardy Homesteaders Day commemorates Hardy’s founding in 1883. It is scheduled for the last Saturday in September; check the latest event details before your trip, as dates and programs may change. Activities include demonstrations of traditional crafts, live music featuring multiple bands and stages, and activities for children. Food cooked over an open fire is also part of the festival program.
The seasonal Music on Main program offers free concerts in a variety of musical styles every Saturday evening from Memorial Day through the end of October at Doc Thompson Park on Main Street. Dates and performers can change here, too, so checking the current events calendar can help with planning. The two events are quite different: Homesteaders Day combines crafts and festivities at a September event, while Music on Main features evenings of music over a longer seasonal period.
Choose a Suitable Base for Your Trip
Your planned focus is a good starting point when choosing a vacation rental or vacation home: Would you like to devote your days mainly to forests and nature, plan a float trip, explore historic buildings, or attend an event? This helps you choose a base that suits your own travel plans, rather than assuming there is one universally best location for everyone.
