Faulkner brings together river valleys, lakes, historic sites, and a variety of trails to create a destination with many different sides. Those looking for a vacation rental or vacation home can shape their trip around nature experiences, culture, or regional history. Part of Faulkner County consists of gentle hills and river valleys; this landscape shapes the choice of excursions as much as the towns and facilities around Conway.

River Landscapes and Trails around Conway

Cadron Settlement Park sits on a hill overlooking the Arkansas River just west of Conway. The 150-acre site was established in 1979 and offers a boat ramp, hiking trails, picnic areas, and two pavilions. Two exhibits address the history of the Trail of Tears. More than 700 Cherokee were stranded at Cadron Settlement Park for 16 days during a cholera epidemic—a historical connection that gives the landscape experience particular depth.

The structures in the park also tell stories of earlier times. The Cadron Blockhouse is a replica of a late-18th-century structure that served settlers and fur traders as a residence, trading post, and public meeting place. In the 1850s, Cadron was also a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail Route. The Trail of Tears and the Butterfield Trail at Cadron are part of the Arkansas Historic Trails System.

For shorter outings in and around Conway, there are several other specific options. The city's original walking and biking trail runs 3.1 miles along Tucker Creek from Tyler Street to Hogan Lane. The Dave Ward Pedestrian Bridge safely connects the sections of Conway's trail system. Tucker Creek flows into Tupelo Bayou, which empties into the Arkansas River. Those who prefer to take in nature from the car can plan the 4.5-mile Lake Conway WMA Woodlands Auto Tour, which has five stops.

Lakes, Water, and Active Outings

Lake Conway covers 6,700 acres and is a popular fishing destination for catfish, bream, and bass. Beaverfork Lake Park also has an 18-hole disc golf course. This makes it possible to combine time by the water with a sporting activity, without every trip having to follow the same rhythm.

Another natural setting is offered by Woolly Hollow State Park in Greenbrier, about 18 miles north of Conway. Lake Bennett is a 40-acre lake where fishing is available. Canoes, kayaks, and pedal boats can be rented in the park. The 3.5-mile Huckleberry Trail loop runs along the lake, over the earthen dam, and through a deciduous forest. Enders Fault offers a 9.4-mile destination for mountain biking.

The park also preserves visible traces from the Great Depression: Erosion-control structures from that era can still be seen today. The Woolly Cabin is an original one-room family home built in 1882. It was moved to its current location and restored in 1975. This contrast can be helpful when choosing your accommodation: Conway offers connections to trails, museums, and events, while Greenbrier has its own focus on nature and water at Woolly Hollow State Park.

Museums, Art, and Regional Traditions

The Faulkner County Museum is housed in the historic County Jail, built in 1896. It preserves the history of Conway and Faulkner County through exhibits on historic and modern crafts, equipment, and photographs. Visitors can also use the research and archival collections for genealogical or historical research on Faulkner County.

The Baum Gallery is an educationally focused art museum for students, faculty, and staff of the University of Central Arkansas, as well as the Central Arkansas community. It presents national and international traveling exhibitions alongside juried student exhibitions. Another cultural side of Conway is shown by Toad Suck Daze, a spring tradition in the Conway area that has existed since 1982. In the downtown area, it includes the World Championship Toad Races; the Toad Market offers shopping at local boutiques as well as booths featuring crafts and handmade art products.

Music and golf round out the selection. The Conway Symphony Orchestra performs masterpieces and lesser-known musical works, and gives concerts for holidays, children, and in parks. The Arkansas Golf Center offers a public driving range, golf club fitting, and golf instruction. This allows you to take your preferred daily rhythm into account when looking for a vacation rental: historic sightseeing, art, and music suit a culture-oriented stay, while lakes, trails, and sporting activities offer different focal points.

Places for Further Travel Planning
