Discover Baxter County
Accommodation in Baxter County
Baxter County combines a rugged, mountainous landscape with expansive bodies of water, historic towns, and unusual insights into history and nature. Norfork Lake stretches 43 miles through Baxter and Fulton counties. Its 22,000 acres of clear water lie along a forested, largely undeveloped shoreline. Those looking for a vacation rental or vacation home in Baxter County can tailor their trip particularly well according to whether they want to focus on water activities, fishing, nature observation, or culture.
Lakes and Rivers as Defining Features of the Landscape
At Norfork Lake, sailing, water skiing, and swimming are possible. You can also fish there for largemouth bass and crappie. From the early 1950s onward, the Norfork became known in the region for trout fishing. The AGFC manages the trout fishery in the North Fork of the White River from Norfork Dam to its confluence with the White River. In Baxter County, the White River is cited as a resource for water-based recreational activities.
For a range of interests, Dry Run Creek next to the Norfork National Fish Hatchery offers fishing opportunities for children and visitors with limited mobility. At the hatchery, you can walk around 96 outdoor pools and learn about earlier stages of trout production in the Hatch House. A visitor center with native animals and informational materials provides additional insight. This makes it possible to combine time by the water with an educational nature experience.
Nature Experiences and Trails
Bull Shoals-White River State Park is located on the shores of Bull Shoals Lake and the White River. At the James A. Gaston Visitor Center, exhibits and a theater video present the history and fishing of the White River, Bull Shoals Dam, and Bull Shoals Lake. The visitor center is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Big Spring Park has a boat ramp, and a hiking trail leads upstream toward the historic Denton Ferry site, which lies along the Trail of Tears.
The landscape is also impressive underground: Bull Shoals Caverns is a living limestone cave system approximately 350 million years old. Underground streams and stalactite and stalagmite formations characterize this special natural environment. When choosing your accommodation, it may therefore be helpful to consider in advance whether you would rather plan days at the lake, excursions to rivers and parks, or a variety of nature excursions.
History and Special Places
The Jacob Wolf House was built in 1829 as the first permanent courthouse of Izard County in the Arkansas Territory. The historic site is certified as an official Trail of Tears Interpretive Center. It is also the last surviving two-story Dogtrot building with a public function in the United States. Mountain Village 1890 is a recreated Ozark settlement with authentic 19th-century buildings.
Cotter hosts the family-friendly First Security Cotter Trout Festival in Big Spring Park every year. Cotter Bridge is the only bridge in Arkansas known to have been designed and constructed by the Marsh Engineering Company. At the Baxter County Historical Museum, you can learn about local history on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; admission is free.
