Athens: Fiddle Music, History and Greenways
Accommodation in Athens
Athens brings together a distinctive music event, historic sites and trails for an active stay. The Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention, Fort Henderson and the Richard Martin Trail represent very different sides of the area. Families can enjoy the Athens Recreation Loop, a trail specifically suited to family walks; culture enthusiasts can explore several clearly defined themes. Before searching for a vacation rental, consider whether an event, historic sites or time outdoors will shape your stay.
Fiddle Music, Events and Local History
The Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention takes place annually on the first full weekend in October. It is both a music event and a competition: winners are named the Alabama State Fiddle Champion and state champions in more than a dozen other categories. On the historic grounds of Athens State University, regional artisans display their work and offer custom-made souvenirs. If the convention is the reason for your trip, plan around its dates and check your specific travel dates against them.
Athens’ historic Courthouse Square provides a setting for numerous events. The Athens Courthouse Square Commercial Historic District meets the criteria for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Its local significance in commerce, politics and administration, as well as transportation, provides the basis for this designation. The Square is therefore not only a venue for events, but also a reflection of the area’s economic and civic history.
History at Forts, Schools and Historic Buildings
Fort Henderson Historic Site is an earthwork fortification built by US Colored Troops during the American Civil War. Trinity School was later established on the fort’s ruins. It went on to become the first high school for African American students in the state of Alabama. This sequence connects the history of the fort with Athens’ educational history without conflating the two.
Other buildings also tell stories from different chapters of the area’s history. The College Inn/Newby Gulf Station Museum is housed in a two-building gas station and diner complex built in 1933, one of the first gas stations built in Athens. The restored Houston Memorial Library serves as a public library and history museum. It commemorates George S. Houston, who was twice governor of Alabama and a US senator, and lived there. The Alabama Veterans Museum’s collection of memorabilia spans military conflicts from the American Revolutionary War to the present day. Visitors can focus on very different topics at these sites: the history of early gas stations, political history, education and military commemoration.
Parks and Trails: From a Loop to a Longer Route
Big Spring Memorial Park is located in the Beaty Historic District. Visitors can spot ducks, herons and koi there; the park also has a pavilion, a tennis court and six pickleball courts. Wildlife watching and sports activities sit side by side here, without any single activity having to define your stay.
The 1.53-mile Athens Recreation Loop is well suited to a walk or a family outing on foot. The loop runs from the Athens Recreation Center to Swan Creek Park. The Richard Martin Trail is on a different scale: its one-way route is more than ten miles long and passes sites associated with the American Civil War, agricultural landscapes and areas rich in wildlife. In Athens, the trail reaches Mitchell-Coffman Park in Piney Chapel. Comparing the two trail formats can help with planning: one is a 1.53-mile loop, while the other is a considerably longer one-way route. A greenway also connects the Athens SportsPlex, the Athens Recreation Center and the Athens Stadium Track, extending as far as U.S. Highway 72.
Find the Right Travel Style for Your Vacation Rental
When choosing a vacation rental in Athens, start with the experiences that matter most to you. A trip centered on the Fiddlers Convention is tied to a specific weekend; for a history-focused stay, historic sites and museums offer a range of themed options. If spending time outdoors is more important, the family-friendly loop, the longer Richard Martin Trail and the grounds of Big Spring Memorial Park each have a distinct character. Your vacation rental can then serve as a base for exactly the mix of music, history and activity you want to experience in Athens.
