Delta: Discover Nature, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Delta
Delta invites you to consider nature and cultural interests side by side when planning your trip. Cheaha State Park is located in the area surrounding the town and is encircled by Talladega National Forest; Cheaha Wilderness is also part of this forest area. The park offers trails with different profiles alongside an Interpretive Center and two museums. This gives you specific options to choose between a viewpoint, a streamside route, a challenging trail and cultural sites.
Hiking trails with different profiles
Compared directly, the 0.3-mile Pulpit Rock Trail is the shortest of the three trails and leads to a viewpoint. The Mountain Laurel Trail is 1.4 miles long, follows the stream through a laurel thicket and is therefore the longest. At 1.0 mile, the Lake Trail is in between, but it is very steep and challenging, with an elevation change of 1,000 feet. So the trails differ in more than just length: the viewpoint is the destination on Pulpit Rock, the streamside and laurel shape the Mountain Laurel route, while steepness and elevation change define the Lake Trail. When planning, you can weigh length, destination and terrain together rather than comparing only the mileage.
The Bald Rock Accessible Trail is open daily from 7 a.m. until sunset. Since this is current operating information, check the opening hours before your visit.
Cultural sites and getting to Cheaha State Park
The cultural sites also have specific locations in the park. The Interpretive Center was created by repurposing the historic CCC Lake House: the building thus took on a new role as a center. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Museum is located in the Observation Tower, while the Walt Farr Native American Relic Museum is next to the Mountain Store. Each of the three facilities is associated with a particular place or building, adding a cultural focus to the hiking trails.
For travel to Cheaha State Park from the north and east, the park recommends the Talladega Scenic Drive on Alabama Highway 281. This route recommendation may change, so check the route before setting out.
Delta and choosing your vacation rental
Clay County State Public Fishing Lake, also called Fred R. Harders Lake, is one mile west of Delta. Both names refer to the same lake; the location places it west of the town and adds another specific point of interest to the regional park information.
When looking for a vacation rental in Delta, it helps to first identify the kind of trip you want. You can consider whether your plans will be shaped more by the trails’ different profiles, the cultural sites at Cheaha State Park or the lake’s location.
