Basseterre tells its story through distinctive squares, churches and places of remembrance. The Circus adds a British touch, while Independence Square and several churches reveal different chapters of the past. The city is also home to a National Museum with exhibitions on the history of St. Kitts and Nevis, and Port Zante, an important hub for ferry services and shopping.

Squares and City Landmarks

The Circus is a roundabout modelled on London’s Piccadilly Circus and is considered Basseterre’s clearest symbol of British influence. Around it are luxury boutiques and restaurants serving local and international cuisine; the offerings at individual shops and restaurants may change. The square combines a striking urban landmark with shopping and a range of cuisines.

Independence Square also has a distinctive historical design: its layout was created to resemble the Union Jack. Benches and newly planted trees lend a green character to the square, where locals and tourists sit. It offers a different atmosphere from the Circus roundabout for a quieter pause between sights. In the wider destination of Saint George Basseterre, Independence Square was laid out in 1790.

Museum, Memorial and Churches

The National Museum opened in 2002 and has been expanded since then. Its exhibitions explore the heritage and history of St. Kitts and Nevis, including slavery, sugar production, rebellion and, ultimately, independence. The exhibitions may change. Visitors interested in the islands’ complex history will find a way to explore the subject here that goes beyond individual buildings and squares.

The Berkeley Memorial combines a clock and a drinking fountain. George Smith and Co of Glasgow, Scotland, designed and made the memorial. Of three similar structures produced by the foundry, only the one on St. Kitts survives. The Co-Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception offers a contrasting architectural style: this richly decorated grey-stone church stands on the east side of Independence Square.

The small St. Barnabas Anglican Chapel is on Malone Avenue. Its history goes back to a time when French Huguenots lived in Basseterre: they were eventually allowed to build a church on the site previously occupied by the chapel. The interdenominational Concert of Christmas Songs is also held annually at St. George’s Anglican Church.

Ferry Services and a Different Travel Focus

Port Zante grew out of a land reclamation project launched in 1993, which created berths and duty-free shopping areas. Today’s retail offerings may change. Several ferry services operate in both directions from Port Zante during the week. If a ferry is part of your travel plans, check the schedule in advance. This lets you take this mode of transport into account without assuming a particular service or departure time.

The wider destination of Saint George Basseterre offers other themes with a different character. Fort Street is the most prominent surviving reminder of Basseterre’s historic forts; Fort Thomas was formerly known as Bluff Point. The Strip in Frigate Bay offers nightlife and beach bars. Kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and jet skiing are available on the calm Caribbean waters of Frigate Bay; the availability of activities may change.

Choosing the Right Focus

If you are mainly interested in squares, architectural history, churches and the museum, a culture-focused trip is a good fit for the aspects of Basseterre described here. If you also want to include nightlife or water sports in your holiday plans, you can consider the offerings in Frigate Bay as other interests within the wider destination of Saint George Basseterre. A holiday rental in Basseterre is a good search option if you want to focus your stay on the city’s sights and history.
