Santa Fe combines tropical rainforest, mountain trails, coffee and chocolate tastings, and a Caribbean beach village. This lets you choose different priorities when planning your trip: hiking and nature, local products, or time by the water. Santa Fe National Park encompasses 700 km² of tropical rainforest and is associated with the Santa Fe District. More than 300 orchid species have been identified in the park and its surroundings; this number may change as further surveys are carried out.

Rainforest, Orchids, and Mountain Views

The Sendero de Loma Grande is located within the protected area. At the park’s southern end, Cerro Tute rises to 1,050 meters. Open landscape views can be seen along the 4×4 access road. Trail and access conditions may change; check them before setting out. This landscape reveals Santa Fe on several scales: from the protected area’s rainforest to the heights and views at Cerro Tute.

Hiking Trails with Different Profiles

The hike to Alto de Piedra is 1 km long, rated easy to moderate, and leads to three waterfalls ranging from 10 to 15 meters in height. The round trip to Bermejo Waterfall is 2.5 km; the trail is also considered easy to moderate. The waterfall is 35 meters high and is located at the edge of Santa Fe National Park. The distance and elevation details help you compare these two outings without treating their routes as the same.

The Sendero de los Tucanes connects Alto de Piedra with La Piquera. It is 2 km long and generally flat. Its route between two places and largely level profile distinguish it from the trails to the waterfalls. For planning a longer hike, Cerro Mariposa offers another point of reference: the trail climbs from 850 to 1,400 meters over 3.5 km; the typical 7 km round trip takes about eight hours. This time is an approximate guide, not a fixed hiking time.

The historic Chilagre Trail also tells a story of a different kind of journey. It is more than 35 km long and heads toward the historic Cocuyo gold mines. Along the way, it follows the Río Santa María toward its headwaters and crosses the continental divide. Its length and historical route make it a distinct option alongside the shorter trails described here. When hiking, take changing trail conditions into account.

Coffee, Cacao, and Local Culture

Finca María y Chon offers a tasting tour about the coffee-making process. Finca El Salto invites visitors to enjoy a culinary tasting of homemade chocolate made with locally grown cacao. If coffee production or cacao is part of the travel experience you’re looking for, these two fincas offer specific ways to explore them. Confirm each tasting directly with the finca before you arrive.

Santa Fe’s well-known forms of craftsmanship include Pintado hats, Ngabe clothing, jewelry, and paintings. The Mercado Agrícola y Artesanal is next to the church in Santa Fe. The Asociación de Productores de Orquídeas de Santa Fe also holds an annual orchid exhibition. If you would like to visit the exhibition, check the dates before your trip.

Beach and Boat Trips in Calovebora

Calovebora is a Caribbean beach village in the northern part of the Santa Fe District, on the Calovebora River and at the end of paved Road 33. The beach is wild and windy. Possible activities include boat trips in the river mouth or to nearby beaches. Calovebora offers a different focus from the hiking trails and tastings: here, the beach and water shape your travel plans. Check boat trip options and beach conditions locally, and check the road conditions before setting out.

When choosing a vacation rental, you can first consider which matters more to you: the trails and fincas in Santa Fe, or the beach and boat trips in Calovebora. This helps you tailor your search to the kind of stay you want, without assuming that the different outings are part of a single route.
