Discover Villanueva: Culture, Festivals, and Vacation Rentals
Accommodation in Villanueva
Villanueva combines impressive architecture with festivals, music, and regional specialties. The stories of the town unfold in many different ways: in a monumental nativity scene, in the architecture of the Templo de San Judas Tadeo, and in a musical tour through central streets. There are also cultural events with set dates and dishes that are part of the regional food culture. This variety gives you different starting points for tailoring your stay and your search for a suitable vacation rental to your interests.
Nativity Scene Art, Architecture, and History
Villanueva preserves a monumental nativity scene with more than 4,700 figures depicting 179 biblical scenes. On February 3, 2026, it had been in existence for 64 years. The large number of figures and scenes makes it a distinctive cultural feature of the town; for families, it can be a shared opportunity to discover different figures and motifs.
The Templo de San Judas Tadeo stands in the municipal seat. Its main dome is decorated with mosaics of the four Evangelists; its furnishings also include gilded altars and retablos. Veneration of Saint Jude Thaddeus in Villanueva dates back to the beginning of the 19th century. His patron saint’s feast is celebrated on October 28; the annual celebrations may vary.
The Palacio Municipal also tells the story of the town. The building was constructed in 1858. The public clock Amelia is on the roof, and a monumental stained-glass window depicting Villanueva’s history is inside. The clock is a distinctive feature, though its operation may change.
La Quemada and a Musical Tour
In the municipality of Villanueva, the Museo de Sitio de La Quemada presents the site’s history in five chronologically arranged thematic modules. It reopened on March 15, 2025; check current visiting conditions before your visit. The largest ball court at La Quemada is also located in the municipality: it is 80 meters long and 15 meters wide. The museum and court offer two different ways to engage with the site’s history.
The Paseo Musical de Antonio Aguilar uses QR codes to guide visitors on a musical tour through Villanueva’s central streets, ending at a building that was once his home. If you plan to take this tour, check in advance whether the QR installations are currently available. This lets you fit the musical discovery into your day’s plans without confusing it with the fixed dates of local festivals.
Festivals, Crafts, and Regional Cuisine
The Fiesta de San Isidro takes place every year on May 15. It includes a procession on horseback that ends with a Pastorela. In June, the Antonio Aguilar Festival features artistic and academic performances, photo exhibitions, dances, music, and charro-taurine activities. Programs may vary from year to year; check current event dates before traveling.
Another event on October 28 is the Feria Regional de Villanueva. The annual celebration includes religious, traditional, and artistic activities throughout the municipality. It also includes a Festival de la Torta, which highlights the regional torta as a municipal specialty. The patron saint’s feast and the Feria therefore share a date, but remain distinct points of interest for planning.
Villanueva’s crafts include sarapes, handicrafts, cantera stonework, woodwork, and saddles and leather goods from the charro tradition. Local foods include, among others, condoches de frijoles: a type of gordita made from wheat. Huicholas are a regional bread made with wheat flour, sugar, and honey, sold around the main square. Architecture, crafts, and cuisine offer different themes from a stay planned around event dates.
Vacation Rentals and Travel Planning
In the municipality of Villanueva, Hacienda La Encarnación offers accommodation, a temazcal, a spa, and a leisure area with pools fed by thermal springs. Confirm current amenities before booking. When searching for a vacation rental in Villanueva, it helps to first decide what you want your stay to focus on: a particular festival, architecture and culture, or regional cuisine and crafts. Match your plans to the dates and experiences you want.
