Hoctun: Churches, Festivals and Special Discoveries

Hoctun can be explored through several distinct themes: sacred art, recurring festivals, a cemetery culture with distinctive designs, as well as Cenote Ek Bis and archaeological ruins. Churches and festival dates add religious accents, while the colorful tombs offer their own visual motifs. The cenote and ruins add further facets to the picture of the town.

Churches and religious imagery

The Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel is Hoctun’s main church; the San Miguel Arcángel temple dates back to the colonial period. The parish church has wooden altarpieces depicting the Santo Cristo de la Transfiguración and the Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepción. Altarpieces are decorated structures behind altars. Both figures also appear in the festival calendar: one festival is dedicated to the Virgen, and another to the Santo Cristo. Another church building with a known date is the San Lorenzo temple, built in the 18th century. Hoctun thus brings together different religious images and periods of construction.

Festivals throughout the year

Hoctun celebrates a festival in honor of the Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepción from May 15 to 31. A festival is dedicated to the Santo Cristo de la Transfiguración from July 15 to August 6, and San Miguel Arcángel is honored from September 25 to 29. The three date ranges fall in May, across the transition from July to August, and in the final days of September. This makes it possible to plan a stay around a festival by choosing the right dates, rather than treating the celebrations as a single event. Cemetery with individually designed mausoleums

Graves and mausoleums in Hoctun’s cemetery are decorated with individually designed paintings in vivid colors. There are also unusual replicas: the cemetery contains a replica of the Torre Latinoamericana in Mexico City, and some mausoleums are topped with a replica of the Kukulkan Pyramid at Chichén Itzá. Colorful, individually designed tombs thus appear alongside motifs from well-known buildings. This distinctive design adds a cultural accent alongside the churches and their religious depictions.

Cenote Ek Bis and the ruins at Holactún

Cenote Ek Bis is located in Hoctun. A report from 2018 recounts that cave divers found endemic blind fish there, known as dama blanca. A 2018 report states a clear limitation on diving in the cenote: it is suitable only for cave divers with the appropriate expertise. The discovery and this restriction make clear that diving is a specialized activity. Archaeological ruins are also located in an area of Hoctun known as Holactún. The cenote and ruins thus represent different natural and archaeological aspects of the town.
