Xalapa Between History and Water

Xalapa lies on the eastern slopes of Cofre de Perote and brings together historic urban spaces, archaeological collections, and places shaped by water. Historic Streets and City History

Xalapa’s historic center has more than 350 buildings of historic and architectural value. The Historic Monuments Preservation Zone of Xalapa de Enríquez covers 0.33 km² and 28 blocks, with historically and architecturally valuable buildings dating from the 17th to the 19th century. Its partly regular street grid was adapted to the topography and water drainage. Both the buildings and the layout of the streets shape the character of this zone.

The Barrio de Xallitic is located in the historic center. Its cobbled streets and continuously flowing water invite visitors to take a stroll and evoke memories of the city’s history. Archaeological Collections at the Museo de Antropología

Archaeological objects are displayed in six halls, nine galleries, and three pergolas at the Museo de Antropología de Xalapa. A museum visit offers a different focus from a walk in the Barrio de Xallitic: in one case, archaeological objects take center stage; in the other, the historic streetscape. This lets you include different aspects of Xalapa’s history in your travel plans.

Walking Routes and Water Spots

Paseo de los Lagos is a shaded walking route beneath leafy trees and leads to three bodies of water known as El Dique. It opened in 1973 and features a stage for theater and concerts, as well as a hall for temporary exhibitions. The walk and cultural offerings provide different highlights; the program may vary. Parque Los Tecajetes was created over a natural depression. An underground freshwater spring feeds aqueducts, artificial pools, and canals there. The two water spots offer different perspectives: at the Paseo, the walking route to three bodies of water is a defining feature, while at Los Tecajetes, the spring and the facilities it feeds are part of the park’s description.
