Villa de Pozos has a clear cultural focus: the religious tradition of the Procesión de los Cristos. It is complemented by notable places such as the Parroquia de San Francisco de Asís and Jardín Hidalgo, as well as the town’s founding story and its historical relationship with the miners of Cerro de San Pedro. This gives you a concrete picture of religious customs, art and local history to help plan your trip.

The Procesión de los Cristos

The Procesión is a religious procession on foot, accompanied by candles, banners and music. It dates back to the 19th century and is regarded by the residents of Villa de Pozos as a symbol of their identity. Its religious character is therefore as defining as its importance as part of local heritage.

At the 2025 celebration, families carried more than 400 Cristos from the four cuarteles of Villa de Pozos along the main streets of the municipal seat. Families also preserve the images of Christ beyond the procession as a legacy passed down from generation to generation. The procession is thus both a public tradition and a family heritage.

On August 10, 2026, the municipal council of Villa de Pozos unanimously recognized the Procesión de los Cristos as intangible cultural heritage of the municipality. It also supported the application for recognition as intangible cultural heritage of the state; at that time, the application was still under consideration.

Church, Art and Local History

Notable attractions in Pozos include the Parroquia de San Francisco de Asís and Jardín Hidalgo. The works “Medallon de San Bartomé” and “la Virgen de la Merced y San Pedro Nolasco” are also associated with the parish. In 2024, they were transferred to UASLP for a limited period for educational purposes. This art-historical connection complements the religious tradition with a specific theme from the church’s art collection.

Villa de Pozos was founded in 1592 by Diego de Tapia as Real de San Francisco de los Pozos. The Hacienda de beneficio, which served the miners of Cerro de San Pedro, provides another historical connection. The founding and the hacienda point to two distinct aspects of local history: the town’s early beginnings and its historical relationship with the miners.

The traditional Iglesia del Panalillo is also one of the notable places in the municipality’s cultural and historical offerings. Women artisans from Villa de Pozos make pieces using papier-mâché techniques. This craft offers a different cultural perspective from the procession and church history.

Planning Your Trip to Pozos

When choosing a holiday rental in Pozos, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your trip. If you want to center your visit on religious tradition, local history and art, Villa de Pozos offers several specific points of interest. On a family trip, the procession can be a shared conversation topic: images of Christ, music and the passing down of the images offer different perspectives on the same custom. If you are planning your trip around the Procesión, check the event dates in advance.
