Estación Catorce: Railway History and Culture
Accommodation in Estación Catorce
Estación Catorce is known for its railway history and is a starting point for journeys toward Wirikuta, the sacred land of the Huichol people. The historic station, the parish church, and the Rosa de Plata tradition give the town a distinctive cultural focus. At the same time, the wider destination of Catorce offers other stories and activities. When looking for a vacation rental, it is therefore worth first considering whether your itinerary will focus mainly on Estación Catorce or include several places in the destination of Catorce.
Railway History and Local Life
The historic Estación Catorce railway station was built on the México–Laredo main line of the Ferrocarril Nacional Mexicano. In May 1888, the Ferrocarril Nacional's construction locomotive reached the future station site. In November of the same year, rail service between Mexico and Laredo de Tamaulipas began on this line. The town's history thus recounts two successive stages: first, the construction locomotive reached the future station, and then rail service began on the line.
In the center, at Calle Iturbide No. 6, stands the Parroquia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. A local publication from August 2006 describes the Rosa de Plata tradition: on the last weekend in June, people from Estación Catorce and Monterrey carry the rose on foot in alternating stages and present it to the parish church. If you plan to time your trip around this occasion, check the current dates in advance.
A report dated June 23, 2025, covered the opening of the Museo de Estación Catorce, which aims to preserve the railway and cultural history of the municipality. For the opening, the museum displayed historic photographs of women who worked at railway stations: some carried heavy loads, while others operated the train. The exhibition thus also offered a look at the range of jobs in railway operations.
History in the Wider Destination of Catorce
Within the wider destination of Catorce, Real de Catorce offers a different historical focus. It is a former mining settlement in the Altiplano, founded around 1778. On November 29, 2012, Real de Catorce was declared a zone of historic monuments; the zone includes 123 monuments from the 18th and 19th centuries. The remains of the Plaza de Toros can also be seen there. The Antigua Casa de Moneda was built by Santos de la Maza starting in 1863, opened in 1865, and closed a year later. The profiles of the two places thus emphasize different themes: railway history in Estación Catorce, and mining and minting history in the wider destination of Catorce.
Buildings also add to this picture of the past. The Túnel de Ogarrio is 2.3 kilometers long, runs through solid rock, and leads to Real de Catorce. The Palenque de Gallos has stone-carved seating that recalls Greek theaters. The wider destination of Catorce also has a religious tradition: the temple dedicated to the Purísima Concepción houses an image of Saint Francis of Assisi, which hundreds of pilgrims venerate every year on October 4.
Walks and Explorations
In the wider destination of Catorce, Pueblo Fantasma consists of the ruins of former processing haciendas belonging to the Minas de Concepción and the Compromiso shaft. A visit includes a walk of about an hour, with views of the hills and a panoramic view of the town. In Real de Catorce, you can explore the surroundings on horseback. Willys vehicles, off-road precursors to the Jeep, can also be rented there. They are used to explore rough tracks and trails, as well as the semi-desert plains and ridges in the surrounding area. Availability may vary by provider.
A route description published in August 2006 leads from Estación Catorce through Carretas and Los Catorce to Real de Catorce. If you plan to take this route, check current conditions and available transport options in advance. The wider Catorce destination offers different ways to shape your day: an approximately one-hour walk at Pueblo Fantasma, horseback exploration, or tours by Willys.
When choosing your vacation rental, it helps to decide what you want to focus on: Estación Catorce highlights the railway station, the parish church, and the starting point for journeys toward Wirikuta; in the wider destination of Catorce, mining history, the tunnel, ruins, and excursions add to the picture. If you would like to combine several of these themes, take the places you plan to visit and your current route plan into account when choosing where to stay.
