Xcalak between the Caribbean and the reef world

Xcalak is located in the southern Mexican Caribbean, within the Grand Costa Maya, and is considered a tranquil destination for enjoying nature. Nearby, Arrecifes de Xcalak National Park protects mangrove and coral reef areas; Xcalak is the town closest to the park. Boat tours and wildlife watching

A route from Xcalak leads to Bacalar Chico. Along the way, visitors can observe various species of waterbirds; manatees are also frequently sighted there. A boat tour to Bacalar Chico starts in Xcalak and takes guests across the Caribbean Sea to the entrance of the canal. On a route back to the Caribbean Sea via the Zaragoza Canal, tour operators take visitors to the small La Posita reef, where they can snorkel. The experiences differ in focus: the Bacalar Chico route is associated with wildlife watching, while La Posita offers a snorkeling stop at the small reef. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed on every trip; check with the operator about the itinerary before traveling.

A historical note along the canal

On the route from Xcalak via the Zaragoza Canal, visitors are invited to walk from a canal extension to the Locomotora de la Aguada; check access locally. The locomotive was built by the federal government at the beginning of the 20th century, during the Porfirio era. It was intended to connect the political capital of the newly created territory of Quintana Roo at the time to the port of Vigía Chico by rail. This stop adds a cultural and historical dimension to an excursion along the canal, alongside its water and nature experiences.
