Isla Mujeres brings together experiences on the water and a distinctive history of art and culture. At Playa Norte, clear, shallow water and white sand invite you to swim and relax; snorkeling is also possible there. At Punta Sur, you can snorkel among the coral reefs in Garrafón Natural Park. The island also features sculptures that draw on Maya symbols and ideas, as well as unique insights into island trova. This gives you the option to focus on different things during your stay, rather than associating the island with just one experience.

Getting there and choosing the focus of your trip

Ferries from Cancún to Isla Mujeres depart from Puerto Juárez, Playa Tortugas, El Embarcadero, and Playa Caracol. Whale shark watching on Isla Mujeres is associated with the months of May through September. Swimming with whale sharks is also promoted as a tourist activity on the island. International fishing tournaments are also held on Isla Mujeres in May and June. Each of these activities caters to different interests than a day swimming at Playa Norte or snorkeling at the reef. Sculptures and Maya connections

Parque Escultórico de Punta Sur is home to 21 sculptures. Their themes reflect Maya symbols, rituals, and forms of expression from the Maya worldview. The Templo de Ixchel at Punta Sur is also connected to Maya history: it was built in honor of Ixchel, the goddess of fertility, love, and medicine. These places offer different cultural connections if you want to add art and history to your trip.

At Malecón Caribe, 25 sculptures in five “habitats” depict the island’s natural and cultural richness. A particularly direct way to experience island trova can be found at the sculpture “Mujer Isleña”: two QR codes link to interpretations of the songs “Mujer Isleña” by Virgilio “El Chino” Fernández and “Sirenita de Amor” by Isolda Martínez Vera. Here, you can encounter both visual art and musical interpretations of local themes.

Art and nature underwater

MUSA, the Museo Subacuático de Arte, aims to illustrate how art and environmental science work together. More than 440 submerged MUSA sculptures are located in the Manchones exhibition area near the south of Isla Mujeres. Over time, marine life finds refuge among these sculptures. MUSA therefore focuses not only on art, but also on the relationship between the submerged works and their surroundings.

More discoveries and island cuisine

Parque Zazilhá has 11 water features, toilets, showers, lockers, tables for socializing, and public parking. These amenities offer a different kind of outing from the beaches, reefs, and art sites. At the 2025 Concurso del Ceviche Isleño, local chefs, fishers, restaurants, and home cooks presented various versions of the traditional dish. The island’s rich historical heritage is also reflected at Hacienda Mundaca.
