Discover El Marqués: History, Festivals and Craftsmanship
Accommodation in El Marqués
In El Marqués, historic buildings, recurring festivals and local crafts offer a distinctive glimpse of La Cañada. The Iglesia Chiquita, traditions at Cerro de la Cruz and the history associated with Presa del Diablo show different sides of the town. There is also Cantera stonework and locally made Nieves. When planning your trip, you can choose between cultural discoveries, festival dates and more active pursuits.
History and Architecture in La Cañada
The Iglesia Chiquita was built in 1529 and is considered the first Catholic temple constructed in Querétaro. Its distinctive architecture includes three round-arched structures. Each is understood as a symbol of humanity’s European search for God. The church also houses a large, movable baptismal font made of pink Cantera stone. According to some accounts, the Otomí leader Conín was baptised in it—a tradition that should be understood as an account rather than established fact. Building history, architecture and oral tradition come together here in a compact thematic setting.
The Casa de la Cultura also has a long building history: Francisco Amaya Avendaño began its construction in 1873. The building hosts workshops in handicrafts, dance and music. If you would like to combine your trip with one of these workshops, check the current dates and participation options in advance. This lets you pair an interest in history with a look at cultural life today, without confusing the building’s history with the current programme.
Festivals and Religious Traditions
Every year during Holy Week, the Crucifixion is reenacted at Cerro de la Cruz. This brings a recurring religious custom together with a specific place in La Cañada. The hill also has a natural climbing wall and a bouldering area. Cultural tradition and climbing are therefore separate focuses; if you plan to climb there, check the current access conditions in advance.
Two other annual celebrations take place on fixed dates: Señor San Pedro, the patron saint, is celebrated at his temple every year on 29 June. The traditional Fiesta de El Gallo is held annually on 8 December in honour of the Virgen de la Concepción de Hércules. It takes place at Plaza de San Pedro, where a nighttime address is also part of the festivities. If you are planning your trip around a particular celebration, check the specific dates and arrangements in advance. The annual dates provide a guide but are no substitute for checking current plans.
Waterworks, Cantera and Local Sights
Presa del Diablo was built in 1592 as a hydraulic reservoir to control the flow of water. Its history offers a different way to discover La Cañada than the religious buildings: the focus here is on the structure’s former role in managing water. Presa del Diablo is also associated with family picnics as a leisure activity.
In the town centre, urban art decorates some of the façades along streets paved with Cantera stone. You will also find Cantera in local crafts: several workshops work with the stone. Some of the main pieces include religious imagery and household decorations, such as fountains, façades and columns. The workshops add a craft perspective to the architectural sights; this does not imply that any particular visitor offering is available.
Another local speciality can be savoured: at the foot of Calle Venustiano Carranza, you can enjoy the Nieves made there. The pace of exploring La Cañada can vary too: after visiting buildings and learning about traditions, you might take a stroll through the town centre or pause for a local sweet treat—without this implying a particular route.
Which Holiday Rental Suits Your Travel Plans?
Your preferred focus for the trip can help you choose a holiday rental: would you like to concentrate mainly on historic architecture, religious traditions and festivals, or are you more interested in climbing, Cantera craftsmanship and local Nieves? The topics described offer different points of interest, but every stay does not need to include them all. If you have specific plans for workshops, festivals or climbing, check the relevant dates and access conditions.
