San Pablo Etla: Mountain Forest and Nature Education

San Pablo Etla is known for its mountain landscapes and wide range of ecological themes: Along with three hiking trails set up for visitors and recreation, the area’s local profile also includes butterfly breeding, pollinators, and the restoration of damaged natural areas. A nature reserve with more than 3,000 hectares of forest is located in San Pablo Etla. Butterflies, Water, and Ecological Education

At the La Mesita Butterfly House, butterflies from San Pablo Etla and its surroundings are bred in a garden with native or naturalized plants. The Butterfly House also explains the importance of pollinators such as butterflies to the ecosystem. At the La Mesita Center for Ecological Education, visitors can learn about various techniques for restoring damaged natural areas and using water efficiently in a sustainable, educational, and hands-on setting. The ecological themes therefore range from individual pollinators to practical questions of landscape and water management.

The Arca de Noé work also represents the commitment of the San Pablo Etla community: it symbolizes the protection of fauna and the restoration of the aquifer. This community-related theme complements the town’s nature and educational offerings.

San Pablo Etla and the Greater Oaxaca Destination

The greater Oaxaca destination also offers archaeological sites as possible cultural highlights on a trip. Monte Albán was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. The ancient city of Mitla is represented by five monumental architectural groups: Grupo del Norte, Grupo de las Columnas, Grupo del Arroyo, Grupo del Adobe or del Calvario, and Grupo del Sur.
