Morelos: Archaeology, Monasteries and Nature
Accommodation in Morelos
Morelos brings together archaeological history with nature and cultural experiences. In Tepoztlán and Temixco, pre-Columbian sites with their own distinct character take centre stage, alongside historic monasteries, diverse forest landscapes and regional cuisine. To help plan your trip, first choose the experiences that interest you most, then select a holiday rental near the places you want to focus on.
Archaeological Sites with Distinctive Character
The monumental archaeological site of Xochicalco is located in Temixco. It includes the Pyramid of the Feathered Serpents, whose sloping sides are decorated with eight large serpents. The collection at the Museo de Sitio Xochicalco offers another perspective on the site. It includes archaeological pieces recovered during various phases of research and excavation. The architecture and collection thus provide different ways to explore the history of the site. If you plan to visit the museum, check the current access conditions.
In Tepoztlán, the Tepozteco archaeological zone was the seat of the lordship of Tepoztlán and served as a place of worship for Ometochtli-Tepoxtécatl, the deity of pulque, fertility and harvest. The architecture also brings the site to life: the Temple of Tepoztécatl has a two-part pyramidal base, topped by a temple. The climb to the site begins in the Axitla neighbourhood of Tepoztlán. As route conditions may change, check them before your hike.
Chalcatzingo is located in the eastern part of the state. Its archaeological remains are closely connected with the interaction of Olmec culture between the Gulf Coast and central Mexico; the site is considered one of the most important archaeological zones in the Central Mexican Highlands. The chronology of the central architectural complex is also noteworthy: it includes buildings from the Classic period (200–650), the Epiclassic period (650–900) and the Early Postclassic period (900–1200). The enclosed ball court is associated with Chalcatzingo’s role as a sanctuary, as well as with repeated ceremonies and rituals.
Monasteries and Regional History
The Ruta de los conventos is one of the state’s tourist offerings. In addition, the UNESCO World Heritage property “Earliest 16th-Century Monasteries on the Slopes of Popocatepetl” in Morelos includes monasteries in Atlatlahucan, Cuernavaca, Tetela del Volcán, Yautepec, Ocuituco, Tepoztlán, Tlayacapan, Totolapan, Yecapixtla, Hueyapan and Zacualpan de Amilpas. These places add another cultural focus to a trip through Morelos alongside its archaeological sites. If you are particularly interested in architectural and regional history, you can take this focus into account when choosing where to stay, alongside nature and archaeology.
Forest Landscapes and Bird Migration
The natural areas also differ in character. The Corredor Biológico Chichinautzin extends across Morelos, Mexico City and the State of México. In Morelos, it protects the state’s most significant mountain cloud forest. The protected area also lies along a major North American bird migration route, with numerous migratory birds arriving in summer and winter. For nature enthusiasts, this means that seasonal differences are part of the area’s character: bird migration plays a role in both seasons.
Large geological formations shape the landscape of El Tepozteco National Park. The peaks offer panoramic views of Tepoztlán and Cuernavaca. Another forest landscape is the Sierra de Huautla Biosphere Reserve, which extends across Morelos, Puebla and Guerrero and includes dry forests and oak forests. Mountain cloud forest, geological formations, and dry or oak forests thus represent different nature themes to consider when planning your trip.
Regional Cuisine and Choosing a Base
Morelos’s culinary offerings include tacos de cecina, mole de caderas, carnitas and the well-known salsa de chile de árbol. Local markets and restaurants in the region offer culinary experiences that reflect Morelos’s cultural diversity. If regional cuisine matters as much to you as history or landscapes, take this into account when making your plans.
When choosing your holiday rental, you can then connect your interests with specific places: Xochicalco is in Temixco, the Tepozteco archaeological zone is in Tepoztlán, and Chalcatzingo is in the eastern part of the state. Consider which of these stories or nature themes you want to shape your trip, and choose your location accordingly. That way, your search for a suitable base begins with what you want to discover in Morelos.
