Los Reyes De Salgado – Festivals, Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Los Reyes De Salgado
Los Reyes de Salgado combines historic buildings with festivals held in the town’s main square and streets. The annual handicrafts fair on May 12 is a regular cultural highlight; the traditional Day of the Dead program brings together a procession and competitions. Regional cuisine also shapes the municipality’s character, while Los Chorros del Varal offers a distinct natural attraction nearby.
Buildings and Cultural Traces
The Parroquia de los Santos Reyes is designated an architectural historic monument in Los Reyes de Salgado. The Capilla de San Gabriel dates from the 16th century; its dome is painted with religious motifs. The parish church is notable for its monument status, while the chapel also draws attention for its decorated dome.
A monument to General José Trinidad Salgado Rentería stands beside the “Los Reyes 400” obelisk. In January 2022, the fountain at the obelisk was reopened for residents and visitors entering the city via this access point. The Casa de la Cultura de Los Reyes was established in 1995 as a joint program of local and state governments to promote and disseminate cultural activities. It offered workshops in painting, dance, photography, English, Purépecha and ceramics. The mix of art, movement, languages and crafts shows the range of its former offerings.
Festivals in the Main Square and Streets
Every year on May 12, a handicrafts fair is held in the main square to mark the anniversary of the city’s founding. Regional blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries and avocados are associated with the fair. In 2022, public demonstrations of basic sugarcane-processing methods were also held there. A visit to the fair thus brings together crafts, regional produce and an insight into how it is processed.
The traditional Day of the Dead program includes a competition for altars and graves at the Cobaem site in Los Reyes, as well as events in the main square. The “Marcha de las Ánimas” and competitions in painting, literary calaveras, and Catrinas and Catrines are also part of the program. The procession runs along Calle 16 de Septiembre to the main square. This route gives the commemoration a clear connection to the town’s public gathering places.
Another annual event is the Caravana de la Fantasía, organized by the José Francisco Trinidad Salgado preschool. The municipal family services department then holds a festival with various activities for children. For families with children, the second part of the program is especially clear: a dedicated children’s festival follows the caravan.
Regional Cuisine
In the municipality of Los Reyes, morisqueta is known as steamed rice served with beans fried or cooked in broth and tomato-chili sauce. Cheese or pork is added as well. Chorreadas, bollos and rosquillas are also among the municipality’s local baked goods. These dishes and baked goods offer a culinary connection to the municipality without reducing its cuisine to a single specialty.
