Ipala Beach lies on the open sea and stretches for about five kilometres. Surfing is possible there with appropriate caution; conditions vary by season. If you want to include surfing in your stay, check the conditions locally before making firm plans for a particular day. This helps distinguish between a stay focused primarily on the beach and a trip with planned surfing activities: for the latter, seasonal conditions also matter.

Different Coastal Features in the Surrounding Area

The nearby subzones of Villa del Mar 1 and Villa del Mar 2 feature other coastal landscapes. Villa del Mar 1 is a predominantly sandy beach in front of Ipala, 60 to 100 metres wide. A sandbar there connects Estero La Boquita to the sea. In addition to the sandy beach, the transition between the estuary and the sea is a notable feature of this stretch. Villa del Mar 2 is also predominantly sandy and extends for approximately 4.8 kilometres to the access point to the place known as Playa Chapis. This length is an approximation. At the southern end of the subzone, a footpath provides access to Playa Chapis, where a slope has a watercourse that flows intermittently. As physical conditions can change, check them before your visit.

The measurements answer different questions: approximate lengths are given for Ipala Beach and Villa del Mar 2, while a width is given for Villa del Mar 1. They help compare the coastal features of each area without adding the different stretches together into one total length.

Ipala in the Natural Environment of Santuario Playa Mismaloya

The 2025 management summary puts the area of influence of Santuario Playa Mismaloya at 111,844.785012 hectares. It consists of a terrestrial polygon and a marine polygon; Ipala lies in the terrestrial part. A location designation from December 2023 describes Ipala as a rural settlement within this terrestrial area of influence. The area figure describes the broader land-and-sea area, not the size of the settlement. It is therefore not comparable with the beach measurements: the coastal figures describe individual beach stretches by length or width, while the hectare figure covers the entire area of influence.

The sanctuary has nesting and egg-laying sites for the olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea), the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), and the leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). The municipality that includes Ipala describes it, along with other beaches, as nearly untouched.

Would you mainly like to experience the beach in town, or should the differently shaped stretches in the nearby area also be part of your trip? If you want to visit different beach areas, you can choose the exact location of your accommodation based on these priorities. The various coastal features offer guidance without making the different beach stretches into a single place.
