Guerrero: Archaeology, Lagoons and Coastal Experiences

Guerrero tells its story not only in museums: at Tehuacalco, the stars point to early observations of time, while La Quebrada amazes with dives from great heights and lagoon excursions offer opportunities to observe nature. Archaeological sites, historic buildings and diverse landscapes give this destination several distinct highlights. When planning, you can first consider whether you would rather focus on culture, archaeology, coastal scenery or nature experiences.

Archaeological Sites and Their Stories

At Tehuacalco, residents observed the stars to calculate the time and the length of the year and its seasons. Soledad de Maciel is an ancient city shaped by river stone and adobe. Its partially excavated ball court may be one of the largest in Mesoamerica—the cautious qualification is part of what makes this feature of the site distinctive.

Ixcateopan was the first zone of historic monuments to be declared in Mexico; its historic center is paved with obsidian. The remains of Cuauhtémoc are also said to be kept in the church of Santa María Asunción. Los Tepoltzis is a small ceremonial center on hilltops near Tixtla. Preserved stone masks and figurines bear witness to the stoneworking skills of its inhabitants. The site is currently temporarily closed.

Museums and Historic Buildings

The Museo Histórico de Acapulco is located in Fuerte de San Diego. It presents the port’s early history, as well as stories and legends from the era of the Manila galleons. The fort was completed in April 1617. After an earthquake in 1776, it was rebuilt and completed again in 1783.

In Chilpancingo, the Museo Regional de Guerrero is housed in a building constructed in 1902, which served as the Government Palace and is considered the city’s only officially registered historic monument. The museum opened to the public in March 1987. Its subject matter ranges from Guerrero’s geography and the pre-Hispanic era to Spanish rule and the struggle for independence, as well as the pursuit of political-territorial autonomy, social struggles in the south, and economic activities and cultural expressions.

Lagoons, Coast and Nature

At La Quebrada, divers from the region leap from a height of more than 45 meters into a narrow sea passage between dramatic cliffs. On Laguna de Coyuca, visitors can take trips in flat-bottomed boats and observe the natural surroundings. Pie de la Cuesta has a tropical lagoon ecosystem that includes Laguna de Coyuca and a lush mangrove zone.

Playa Bonfil is home to Acapulco’s largest sea turtle conservation camp. The beach is also a meeting place for surfers seeking challenging waves and spectacular sunsets. Grutas de Cacahuamilpa National Park includes one of Mexico’s most impressive and most visited cave systems, as well as geological formations. The coast, lagoon and cave landscape therefore offer a range of nature and excursion experiences.

Getting There and Choosing a Location

Acapulco can be reached via the Autopista del Sol and by air and sea. To get to Soledad de Maciel, take the turnoff from the Acapulco–Zihuatanejo federal highway toward Petatlán–San Jerónimo, then continue along a local road; check road conditions before setting out. The INAH overview lists visiting hours for Soledad de Maciel as Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:00. Confirm visiting hours before your trip.
