Alcocer combines a distinctive local history with a northern route into the forested mountain landscape of Los Picachos. The hacienda, dam, and temple, alongside the historic route, represent different facets of the town. This makes it possible to plan a stay that combines local heritage and nature experiences without treating the two as one and the same.

Historic Traces in Alcocer

In Alcocer, a hacienda, a dam, and a temple are among the historic monuments of the municipality of Allende. These terms represent different kinds of built heritage: an estate, a waterworks, and a religious building. This variety offers different ways to explore the town’s history and makes Alcocer interesting beyond its landscape.

Alcocer originated as a hacienda owned by the family of the Bishop of Sollano. The town was also connected to the Antiguo Camino Real. The hacienda’s history and the historic route provide two distinct historical reference points for the townscape. Those looking for a vacation rental and interested in local history can include both themes in their travel plans.

Forested Route Toward Los Picachos

The northern route described in 2022 begins in Alcocer, passes through a densely forested area, and continues toward one of the highest peaks of Los Picachos. The upper section is important for planning: the trail can be difficult to follow there, and the route description also mentions private land and barriers. Check local access conditions before setting out.

The panoramic view is also tied to a specific location: from a 5,500 m² plot in the higher part of Alcocer, it is possible to see the mountains and the dam. This view is specific to that property. The view from that particular plot and the described northern route are therefore two distinct landscape experiences: one is a panorama from a specific location, the other a route toward Los Picachos.

San Miguel de Allende as a Regional Context

The broader destination of San Miguel de Allende offers its own cultural and historical context. San Miguel de Allende reached its heyday in the 18th century; many outstanding religious and civic buildings were built in the Mexican Baroque style, including structures that marked the transition to Neoclassicism. The city also developed through cultural exchange between Spaniards, Creoles, and Indigenous peoples. The Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel was built in the late 17th century; in 1880, it received its Neogothic façade of pink ashlar stone. It offers a way to explore an architectural development different from Alcocer’s hacienda heritage.

The historic route connections also differ: Alcocer was connected to the Antiguo Camino Real. San Miguel de Allende was founded to protect the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, which was part of the Ruta de la Plata between Mexico City and major mining centers such as Zacatecas. These two connections mark distinct historical themes within the broader destination.

Another regional destination is Cañada de la Virgen. This ceremonial settlement of Hñähñu, or Otomí, origin was inhabited from 540 to 1050 CE; its temples were aligned symmetrically with the celestial bodies. The site lies in the Río Laja basin, is surrounded by hills, and comprises five monumental complexes across an area of 16 hectares. There, archaeological history and the landscape form a shared context.

Nature and craft interests also add to the regional context of San Miguel de Allende. Since 2014, El Charco del Ingenio has held a federal CONANP certificate in the category Área Destinada Voluntariamente a la Conservación (ADVC) and has an extensive network of trails for environmental interpretation. At the Corredor turístico Artesanal, visitors can learn about traditional techniques and take part in making a handmade piece. It mainly comprises seven workshops for metalwork, wool, and papier-mâché. Alongside Alcocer’s local history, these offer additional interests clearly associated with the broader destination to consider when planning a trip.
