Irapuato combines the history of its historic center with a city whose name is closely associated with strawberries. The city is an important agricultural and commercial hub and is also known as the “Strawberry Capital.” Between its squares, architecture and murals, a trip to strawberry fields and the paths in Parque Irekua, Irapuato reveals different sides of itself. As you plan your trip, consider whether you’d like to focus above all on the city’s history, strawberry experiences or time in nature.

Squares, architecture and a museum in the historic center

Plaza de los Fundadores is in the historic center. Its sculptures recall the city’s origins and give the square a clear historical significance. The current building of Catedral de Irapuato also dates back to the 18th century; its portal is Baroque. These details offer different points of interest if you’re interested in the city’s history and architecture.

Museo Salvador Almaraz is also in the historic center, in an 18th-century mansion. It has two permanent exhibition rooms: Sala de Arqueología del Occidente and Sala de Armas. Their names alone set out two distinct themes: archaeology of the West and weapons. Templo de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad and its surroundings are also among the places to visit in the historic center.

Murals offering different historical perspectives

The Mural de “Los Orígenes” explores the meeting of cultures following the arrival of the Spanish conquerors in 1547. An ancient lake appears in it as a symbol of Indigenous roots. Mural de las Revoluciones addresses a different series of historical themes: the conquest, evangelization, the Mexican War of Independence, the Reform War and the Revolution. By comparison, one mural focuses on cultural encounter and Indigenous roots, while the other brings together several political upheavals.

This can help you narrow down your cultural interests: are you more drawn to a symbolic image of origins or to the portrayal of different historical upheavals? Together with the squares, cathedral and museum, the murals offer several distinct ways to explore the city’s history, so not every visit has to offer the same perspective.

Strawberry fields, FRESIBUS and Feria de las Fresas

The Circuito de la Fresa begins in the historic center with a ride on the FRESIBUS, a panoramic transport service. From there, the tour continues to the city’s strawberry fields, where cultivation and harvesting are introduced. You can take freshly picked strawberries home directly from the field. An optional meal at a centrally located restaurant can also be included; there, strawberries are used to enhance main courses, drinks and desserts.

Feria de las Fresas also puts strawberries at the center, but through artistic, cultural and gastronomic activities. The experiences described therefore differ: the Circuito takes you to the cultivation and harvest, while the Feria brings together various activities centered on the fruit. As you plan your trip, consider which perspective appeals to you most; the Circuito also offers the option of taking strawberries home from the field.

Green paths and a nature refuge

Parque Irekua has a small nature refuge that is home to more than 65 bird species. Its tree-lined paths invite you to walk or run. Nature watching and exercise among the greenery go hand in hand here, so you can include the park in your plans as either a nature-focused visit or an opportunity for an active break.

Fishing is also possible at the lake in Zoológico de Irapuato, known as ZooIra. A fee is required for a permit, which can be paid at the ZooIra offices or ticket counter. Unlike the paths and bird refuge in Parque Irekua, fishing comes with a specific requirement—something to keep in mind as you choose your activities.

Find a holiday rental to suit your travel interests

If you’re traveling with children, you can use your group’s interests as a starting point: city history and murals, strawberry cultivation and harvesting, or birds and paths in Parque Irekua each offer a different focus. Tailor your holiday rental search to which of these sides of Irapuato matters to you. That way, you start with the character of your stay rather than assumptions about accommodation that say nothing about the experiences available locally.
