El Salto: Forest Landscapes, Mirador and Woodworking Tradition

El Salto is known for its forested landscapes and is surrounded by mountains, rivers and pine forests. At the Mirador La Quebrada, the view takes in the mountain landscape; the Museo Comunitario Alhí and the Feria de la Madera add cultural highlights. Mountain panorama at Mirador La Quebrada

The Mirador La Quebrada offers panoramic views of the mountain landscape around El Salto. The viewpoint includes viewing areas and monumental signs bearing the name El Salto. The surrounding mountains and a striking local landmark sit side by side. Glass railings, lighting and a zip line were part of the first phase of the project. Before visiting, check the current conditions at the viewing areas and, in particular, find out whether the zip line is operating.

Museum and Feria de la Madera

The Museo Comunitario Alhí de El Salto is located in El Salto, Pueblo Nuevo, Durango. A description from 2008 mentions artifacts illustrating the history of wood extraction in the region, as well as archaeological pieces. If you plan to visit the museum, check locally what is currently on display. The topics described give space to both the region’s history of wood extraction and its archaeological pieces.

The Feria de la Madera takes place every year in May in El Salto. A cycling competition is traditionally part of the Feria Regional de la Madera. The 2025 Feria de la Madera also featured a traditional lumberjack competition. This brings together different competitions and the theme of wood, without assuming that every event will be included in future editions. More nature and culture in Pueblo Nuevo

Pueblo Nuevo broadens the picture beyond El Salto: it is described as one of the Mexican municipalities with the highest rates of bird endemism. The traditional crafts of Pueblo Nuevo include furniture made from Manzanillo roots; traditional cuisine includes pulque made from corn fermented in the sun. Alongside landscapes, the region offers its own themes in crafts, birdlife and food culture.

At Parque Natural Mexiquillo in Pueblo Nuevo, forests, rock formations, a waterfall, tunnels, cabins and mountain landscapes come together. The old railway tunnels there were built for an unfinished railway line and are now part of an adventure route. They can be explored on foot, by bicycle or on guided tours. This is a different kind of nature experience from Mirador La Quebrada: in El Salto, the focus is on panoramic views, while in Mexiquillo it is on exploring the tunnel route.

Cascada Mil Diez is in Ejido Mil Diez in Pueblo Nuevo, near El Salto, and is 18 metres high. A suspension bridge stands in front of the waterfall. There are also cabins and outdoor areas for walking, relaxing, taking photographs and enjoying outdoor activities; availability may vary. So, if you are looking for a holiday rental, first consider whether your trip will focus mainly on El Salto or on several destinations in Pueblo Nuevo.
