San Cristóbal De Las Casas: Architecture, Museums and Regional Cuisine
Accommodation in San Cristóbal De Las Casas
San Cristóbal de las Casas combines colonial architecture with museums, vibrant traditions and distinctive cuisine. For your trip, you can choose from different interests: architecture and collections, festivals throughout the year, nature experiences nearby or regional dishes. This variety makes the destination appealing if you would like to explore different topics together.
Colonial Architecture and Art Collections
The historic centre is characterised by Baroque, Neoclassical and Mudéjar buildings. The Arco del Carmen was built in the Mudéjar style in 1680. The Iglesia de San Nicolás, built between 1613 and 1621, also preserves this style, which is particularly prominent in the colonial religious architecture of Chiapas. The Catedral de San Cristóbal dates from the 16th century: its architecture combines adobe with Baroque, Mudéjar and Neoclassical elements.
The former Santo Domingo convent and the Iglesia Ex convento de Santo Domingo offer further contrasting impressions. The 16th-century convent houses the Centro Cultural de los Altos de Chiapas. Its striking façade has been regarded as one of the finest examples of Latin American Baroque. The interior of the Iglesia Ex convento de Santo Domingo is lined with carved woodwork and features Baroque altarpieces finished with gold leaf. At the Archivo Histórico Municipal de San Cristóbal de las Casas, the Sala de Arte Sacro preserves paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries.
The museums, in turn, focus on different subjects. The Museo del Ámbar de Chiapas opened on 4 December 2000, is considered the only museum of its kind in Mexico and displays more than 300 exhibits. The Museo de la Medicina Maya is part of the Centro de Desarrollo de la Medicina Maya (CEDEMM) and introduces visitors to Tzotzil-Tzeltal healing practices from the state of Chiapas. The Museo del Café traces coffee from its origins and arrival in Chiapas to the organisation of the region’s small-scale producers.
Festivals, Markets and Nature Experiences
Local traditions also offer opportunities to shape your stay around your interests. Festivals take place in the various city districts during nine out of twelve months. Particularly important are the celebrations on 31 March, marking the city’s founding anniversary, and on 25 July, in honour of Saint Christopher. During Semana Santa, Via Crucis processions with biblical figures take place in the mornings in every city district. The Festival Cervantino Barroco was established in the historic centre and takes place on a variable date between October and December. The programme includes open-air concerts, theatre performances, exhibitions and conferences, among other events.
The traditional market offers another glimpse of local life: Tzeltal and Tzotzil communities from various places sell or trade their products there, wearing colourful clothing. If you would like to combine culture with nature, there are two contrasting destinations nearby. Discovered in 1947, the Grutas de Rancho Nuevo form a cave system with a single opening. The system is 10.2 km long and up to 550 m deep; hiking, camping, mountaineering and photography are possible there. El Arcotete is a natural karst formation in the nearby area: a stone arch about 50 m high, with stalactites and stalagmites, set amid pine forests along the path.
Choosing a holiday apartment in San Cristóbal de las Casas can depend on whether you mainly want to experience the town’s architecture and culture or also plan to visit natural attractions nearby. To travel from Tuxtla Gutiérrez to the Centro Cultural de los Altos de Chiapas, take federal highway 190D and then the northern church footpath to the Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán.
Regional Cuisine
Food is another way to get to know the city’s distinctive character. Asado coleto is one of the main dishes of the regional cuisine. Traditional tamales include tamales de azafrán; sopa de pan is one of the traditional starters. Posh is a traditional drink in the cuisine of San Cristóbal de las Casas. These dishes and drinks offer specific ways to plan your trip around local cuisine as well as architecture and excursions.
