Palenque brings together the city’s cultural life and its proximity to the archaeological zone and national park. In the center, you’ll find textile crafts, a pedestrian walkway with cafés and shops, and the Iglesia Santo Domingo de Guzmán. There are also the patron saint festival and cultural events, which offer different insights into local traditions. This lets you shape your trip around both urban discoveries and Maya history.

City Life and Getting Around

The city of Palenque is 6 km east of the archaeological zone and national park. It has public services as well as accommodations, restaurants, shops and markets. When choosing a holiday apartment, it’s helpful to consider the city and the archaeological zone as distinct points of reference: Would you mainly like to explore the center, or is the nearby site the focus of your trip? The distance is a practical difference between the two locations.

The Museo del Textil Lak Puj Kul is located at Plaza Central in the city center. It showcases textile making by artisans from Chiapas. Visitors interested in textile work and regional craft traditions will find a different way to experience Palenque’s culture here than through the stone relics of the Maya. Its location at Plaza Central also makes the museum an easy-to-find landmark in the city center.

The Andador Turístico de la Hidalgo is a pedestrian walkway in the center, just a few steps from Central Park and the Iglesia Santo Domingo de Guzmán. Along the walkway are cafés, restaurants, craft shops, bars and small stores that reflect local life and culture. If you enjoy strolling through a place and discovering a variety of small spots along the way, you can take this area into account when considering where to stay.

Church and Patron Saint Festival

The Iglesia Santo Domingo de Guzmán stands opposite Central Park. Its simple, traditional architecture, white façade and bell tower define the building. The church is dedicated to Saint Dominic of Guzmán, the community’s patron saint, and serves year-round as a venue for liturgical celebrations, Masses, weddings, baptisms and festive events.

Palenque celebrates its annual patron saint fair with the Feria de Santo Domingo de Guzmán. Its tradition was formalized in 1877 by a decree from the then-governor, Sebastián Escobar. A special part of the patron saint fair is the Mañanitas a Santo Domingo de Guzmán: from August 1 to 4, worshippers gather in the church atrium from 05:30 to honor the saint with traditional mañanitas and music. These early gatherings give the festival days their own rhythm and set them apart from a visit focused on daytime sightseeing.

The annual Festival Mundo Maya Palenque is also part of the cultural calendar of the city in Chiapas. Traditionally, it coincides with Semana Santa. Those interested in different forms of cultural expression can consider this event alongside the religious patron saint fair as another aspect of the city.

Crafts and Maya History

Artisans in Palenque make stone replicas of famous Maya stelae, panels and carved heads. They use the same limestone as the original Maya. Alongside the textiles at the Museo del Textil Lak Puj Kul, these stone works represent another craft tradition connected to the region’s history.

The Museo de Sitio de Palenque Dr. Alberto Ruz Lhuillier is also located within the Zona Arqueológica de Palenque, near the destination. It preserves around 202 pieces from various parts of Palenque, offering insights into the religious beliefs, ritual practices and political organization of the ancient city.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Palenque, you can choose a location based on whether you’d like the city center, with its church, Plaza Central and Andador Turístico, to shape your stay, or whether you’d like to focus particularly on the archaeological zone. The cultural attractions in town and the historic site outside the city offer different ways to shape your trip.
