Mexicali brings together historic cultural sites, Chinese-Mexican food culture and destinations nearby and farther afield. History, architecture and culture come together in the Centro Histórico de Mexicali. When planning your trip, you can choose between the city’s history and cuisine on the one hand, and excursions in the surrounding area on the other. When looking for a vacation rental, you can first consider which of these you would like to focus on.

Museums and Architectural History

The Museo Sol del Niño has more than 260 exhibits across Casa de la Energía, Pirámide del Hombre, Plaza del Sol, Mezanine de Comunicación, Sala de Exhibiciones Temporales and Domo Digital. The museum is housed in the historic structure La Jabonera del Pacífico. In the 1950s, it served as a warehouse for cottonseed, then stood empty for 30 years before being restored to preserve a cultural heritage site recognized by INAH.

The Casa de la Cultura de Mexicali also tells a story of changing uses. The building was inaugurated on September 16, 1916, as Escuela Superior Mixta Cuauhtémoc and was Mexicali’s first formal school. It is made of reinforced concrete and has wooden ceilings and mezzanines. Later, it served, among other things, as an elementary school, high school and university, as well as the headquarters of the UABC rectorate. Since 1974, it has been the Casa de la Cultura de Mexicali.

The El Tecolote building was constructed in 1924, replacing the original Casino El Tecolote, which had been destroyed by fire in 1922. Its North American owners, Allen, Beyers and Wittigton, called it ABW CLUB; in Mexicali, it became known as El Tecolote. The casino could accommodate up to 3,000 guests, who enjoyed performances by international artists there. This account describes the building’s former use.

Culture, Cuisine and Local Traditions

According to its cultural description, history, architecture and culture come together in the Centro Histórico. In 2023, La Chinesca in Mexicali received the Barrio Mágico de México designation. The cuisine also reflects this cultural exchange: Mexicali has dishes that result from a fusion of Chinese and Mexican cuisine. Celebrations for Chinese New Year include applause, a diverse food offering and the traditional dragon dance. Alongside its historic buildings, Mexicali therefore also offers points of interest for travelers interested in Chinese-Mexican culture.

Leisure Spots and Excursions

Several leisure spots in Mexicali were named in a family program presented on April 15, 2025. The Bosque y Zoológico de Mexicali was set to include a farm, a carousel, an aviary, a sack slide and a dinosaur zone. At Ecoparque Laguna México, bicycle paths, children’s play areas and a dog area were mentioned. CDHI Centenario was presented as a place for recreation and leisure with palapas; according to the announcement at the time, using them incurred no additional cost. Parque Vicente Guerrero was described as a 91,100-square-meter leisure complex with areas for recreation, events and exhibitions. Centro Recreativo Juventud 2000 was described as having grills, green spaces, palapas and children’s play equipment. As these details come from the 2025 program, it is advisable to check the current status before visiting.

The surrounding area offers a variety of destinations for outdoor activities. The Dunas de Cuervitos are about an hour east of Mexicali and offer the opportunity to go sandboarding. The Río Hardy is about 45 minutes from central Mexicali. It is 26 kilometers long and is a navigable tributary of the Colorado River, which comes from the United States. In the wider region around Mexicali, birdwatching is an attraction, with more than 350 species, including migratory and endemic birds. These activities are quite different: the dunes are for sandboarding, while the river is navigable and birdwatching offers another way to connect with nature.

Getting There and Choosing a Base

Mexicali is accessible by air via its airport and by land via the border crossing from the United States or Federal Highway 5. When choosing your vacation rental, you can match your arrival plans to your interests: do you want your stay to focus mainly on architectural history, culture and cuisine in Mexicali, or would you also like to plan visits to destinations nearby and farther afield?
