El Sauzal: Surfing, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in El Sauzal
El Sauzal brings together surfing history and coastal recreation with a diverse natural setting and tangible traces of regional history. At Playa San Miguel, surfing and camping take center stage, while birdwatching and wooded areas are part of the scene at Arroyo San Miguel. The area also offers the Casa-Museo Abelardo L. Rodríguez, Hacienda El Sauzal and regional wines. When searching for a vacation rental, it is worth starting with the question of which experiences you want to shape your stay: beach and sports, nature, history or a mix of these.
Surfing history at Playa San Miguel
Playa San Miguel is considered the birthplace of surfing in Mexico. It is a rocky beach where people surf and camp, located on the Tijuana–Ensenada highway in El Sauzal de Rodríguez. The sport’s history is also rooted here: the Baja Surf Club had its meeting place at Playa San Miguel and held Mexico’s First International Surfing Tournament in 1966. This spot therefore brings together today’s recreational activities and a specific chapter in Mexican surfing history.
Birdlife and recreation at Arroyo San Miguel
A total of 107 bird species have been recorded in the Arroyo San Miguel and Playa San Miguel area, which is frequently visited by birdwatchers. Arroyo San Miguel is one of the best-preserved and least altered streams within the city limits of Ensenada. The area thus combines the coast and stream landscape as distinct natural settings. Families often picnic and enjoy other recreational activities at Playa San Miguel and in the wooded areas along Arroyo San Miguel. The area is also used for cultural, sporting, educational and tourism activities. A travel itinerary here can therefore include nature watching and community recreation alongside surfing.
Regional history and architecture
The Casa-Museo Abelardo L. Rodríguez is dedicated to presenting regional history and promoting cultural activities. It is intended to host exhibitions and display objects and photographs of Abelardo L. Rodríguez and other figures of the Mexican Revolution. Abelardo L. Rodríguez and his family lived in the residence that now houses the museum from 1930 to 1967, except for the years when he held government positions in the presidential cabinet. This gives the museum’s address a clear connection to the region’s history.
Hacienda El Sauzal offers another facet of the area’s history: architect Frank Walter Stevenson (1892–1968) designed it in 1930 as a country retreat for General de División Abelardo L. Rodríguez. The hacienda is recognized as cultural heritage of Baja California and is located in the El Sauzal de Rodríguez delegation in the municipality of Ensenada. Its architectural features include red-tile roofs, stucco walls, round arches and balconies with balustrades. Arab- and Moorish-inspired latticework sits alongside Corinthian columns, Ionic elements, towers with chimneys and French windows. These features make the hacienda a notable architectural highlight of the destination as well.
Regional wines and choosing your vacation rental
At the D’Varios Tasting Room, you can sample a menu and more than 80 regional wines. This adds another food-focused element to a trip that includes beaches, nature and historic sites.
When searching for a vacation rental in El Sauzal, you can sort out your priorities: do you want your trip to focus mainly on surfing history and the beach, would you like to explore birds and the stream landscape, or are you especially interested in architecture and regional history? These themes offer different ways to shape your vacation plans without requiring you to choose just one. If you combine different interests, you can give each of them the emphasis you want when planning your stay.
