Saint Andrew Parish invites you to plan a vacation among mountain forest trails, botanical gardens, and historic sites. The experiences vary considerably: alongside short walks through the forest, there are routes with steep climbs, gardens with sweeping views, and visits with a historical connection. The vacation rental that makes the right base depends on which of these aspects you want to focus on.

Forest Trails for Different Levels

At Holywell in the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park, the 350-meter-long Blue Mahoe Trail connects the main picnic area with the visitor center and ranger station. The walk through secondary forest takes about 10 to 15 minutes. The Shelter Trail is an easy walk with little elevation gain: it runs 600 meters one way through tropical cloud forest and is also suitable for a short walk with young children.

Two longer routes with steep climbs offer a very different experience. The Oatley Mountain Trail is a 1.2-kilometer loop to Oatley Mountain Peak at 1,400 meters above sea level; some sections are somewhat challenging. The 1.3-kilometer Waterfall Trail also has a steep climb and is moderately difficult in places. The Oatley Trail’s loop and summit define its route profile, while on the Waterfall Trail, the difficulty of individual sections is what sets it apart.

At Clydesdale National Forest Park, visitors can enjoy walks beneath the canopy of various trees. These canopy walks complement a visit to the park.

Botanical Gardens and Sweeping Views

From Cinchona Botanical Gardens, the view extends to Strawberry Hill, the Blue Mountains, the Liguanea Plains, and Kingston. Hope Botanical Gardens offer a different focus: their collection includes endemic and exotic plants. You’ll also find a cactus garden, a bougainvillea walk, annual gardens, sunken gardens, and a lily pond. A grove of Cassia siamea planted in 1907 is another feature of the grounds. A garden visit therefore lets you choose between views and panoramic scenery on the one hand, and a variety of planting areas on the other.

History at Cinchona and Clydesdale

Cinchona Botanical Gardens were established in 1868. Asian tea was grown on forty acres at Cinchona, which also had a garden of European food crops. These historical details add another dimension to a visit to the gardens.

The site of Clydesdale National Forest Park also has a history of earlier use: it was once home to a coffee-processing facility. So-called “barbecues” and a waterwheel can still be seen. At Devon House, visitors can tour the mansion and shop at gift shops. Check before your visit whether these offerings are currently available.

Jamaica: Culture, Coffee, and Cuisine

Beyond Saint Andrew Parish, Jamaica offers a cultural and culinary context that spans the island. Reggae is a central part of Jamaican culture. Authentic Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is grown exclusively at elevations between 3,000 and 5,500 feet in the cloud forest of the Blue and John Crow Mountain range. Ackee and saltfish is Jamaica’s national dish and a popular local breakfast; depending on the season, it is served with items including fried dumplings, callaloo, green bananas, avocado, and plantains. The annual Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee Festival celebrates coffee and offers coffee-based products to sample.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Stay

When searching for a vacation rental, your planned daily routine can be a useful starting point: those who prioritize short walks and garden grounds will have different needs from those planning to tackle steep trails. A visit to Devon House offers another reason to explore; check current visitor options in advance. Tailor your search for a base to the experiences you want to shape your days.
