Naranjo brings together urban history, religious sites, coffee growing and specific leisure ideas. The historic center is home to the Municipalidad building, the municipal market and the bus station. The Gruta de Lourdes adds a story dating back to the 1920s to these local landmarks; Las Lomas is known for coffee production. Fishing opportunities and a volcanic cone in the surrounding area round out the picture.

Urban History and Religious Heritage

The Municipalidad de Naranjo building has been included in Costa Rica’s historical and architectural heritage. It is located in the historic center, which is also home to the municipal market and the bus station. Three different landmarks therefore come together here: the heritage-listed municipal building, the market and the bus station. If you prefer an urban setting when choosing where to stay, the center offers a specific starting point for your search for a vacation rental.

The story of the Gruta de Lourdes can be told through a clear sequence of events. The foundation stone was laid on December 31, 1923, and the grotto was built in 1924. The first Eucharist there was celebrated on February 11, 1925. In 1999, the grotto and its spring were restored. The work was led by Pbro. Carlos Luis Jiménez Vásquez and supported by the Consejo de Asuntos Económicos and volunteer women from Naranjo.

The Templo Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de las Piedades is another of the town’s religious landmarks: it was recognized as a Templo Jubilar in 2025. Together with the older history of the Gruta’s construction and use, this offers a look at different, clearly dated aspects of Naranjo’s religious heritage.

Coffee and Leisure Ideas

Around 326 producers grow coffee with outstanding characteristics and very high quality in Las Lomas de Naranjo. The Espíritu Santo Coffee Tour in Naranjo focuses on the journey from growing the coffee to the moment it is served in a cup. The landscape of local producers and the journey from cultivation to a served cup thus offer two different perspectives on Naranjo’s coffee scene.

Another leisure idea is a family outing to fish for trout and tilapia. There are several places to do this in Naranjo. Unlike the coffee-related activities, the focus here is on fishing itself—another way to include your interests in your travel plans.

Surrounding Landscape and Where to Stay

The Cerro Espíritu Santo, also called Volcán Espíritu Santo, is visible on the route toward Naranjo. This 1,363-meter-high volcanic cone is located in the Central Valley, northeast of Palmares in the southern part of Alajuela Province. A landscape landmark in the surrounding area thus complements Naranjo’s urban history and experiences. The Cerro is a landmark along the route, while the municipal building, market and religious sites are part of Naranjo’s urban setting.

The historic center offers a specific location to consider when choosing a vacation rental if you would like an urban setting. Coffee growing and fishing appeal to other interests, while the Cerro adds a scenic impression along the route to your plans.
