In Barroeta in Jesús, Atenas, stands the María Auxiliadora temple. Construction began in late January 2007 and took approximately one and a half years. During a stay in Jesús, this relatively recent religious building offers a tangible glimpse of local architectural history.

In the surrounding area, a preserved section of the Camino de cascote de piedra (Alto del Monte) also runs between Alto del Monte in Atenas and Desmonte in San Mateo. These two endpoints locate the section as a distinct geographic reference in the surrounding area.

In the wider destination of Alajuela: culture and architecture

The wider destination of Alajuela offers a broader cultural perspective. In the city of Alajuela, the Museo Histórico Cultural Juan Santamaría occupies a former barracks and a former prison; both buildings are considered to be of heritage interest. The museum features permanent and temporary exhibitions. Its arms collection includes firearms, bladed weapons, ammunition, and accessories, mostly from the second half of the 19th century. The objects currently on display may vary.

The Museo Regional de San Ramón is housed in a former town hall, built in 1878 and declared architectural and cultural heritage in 1982. The museum's rooms include spaces for temporary exhibitions, children's and young adult literature, regional literature and identities, and natural history. The arrangement of the rooms may change over time.

In Sarchí, traditional crafts take center stage: the town is considered the birthplace of Costa Rican crafts and a destination where visitors can see them. A historic, hand-painted church with wooden details stands in the central park. The monumental ox cart is also striking in scale: it is four meters high, six meters long, and decorated in bright colors. A different architectural era is represented by the Templo Metálico Las Mercedes in the center of Grecia. Built in 1897, the temple is considered an architectural gem and a symbol of a period of great prosperity and iron construction at the beginning of the liberal regime of Tomás Guardia.

In the wider destination of Alajuela: volcanoes and trails

Those interested in volcanic landscapes will find a distinctive geological feature at Parque Nacional Volcán Poás: there are two craters at the summit, including the main crater, which is 1.5 kilometers wide and 300 meters deep. Laguna Botos is fed exclusively by rainwater; the volcano reaches 2,708 meters above sea level. Parque Nacional Volcán Tenorio offers a different view of nature. The park and its protected zone cover 18,402.27 hectares and extend across the Alajuelan cantons of Upala and Guatuso, as well as Cañas and Tilarán in Guanacaste. The three-kilometer linear Misterios del Tenorio nature trail passes a waterfall cascade, a viewpoint, a blue lagoon, bubbling springs, and the Teñidero. Before visiting, check whether this trail and its listed stops are currently accessible.

The Heliconias, Coladas, Tucanes, and Los Miradores trails run through Parque Nacional Volcán Arenal. Visitors can observe much of the park's flora and fauna, as well as remnants of lava flows. If trails are part of your plans, check current conditions before setting out.

Wetlands and choosing a location

Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Mixto Caño Negro is a Ramsar site of global importance for wetland conservation. Wildlife there includes jabirus, caimans, and turtles; the system of lagoons and canals can be explored by boat and canoe. Check current options for a boat or canoe trip before traveling. Fishing, kayaking, camping, hiking, and swimming are possible in the wetlands of Bosque Alegre, depending on local conditions and management rules. Laguna Hule is the largest of the three wetlands of Bosque Alegre and has a viewpoint; it is 1,150 meters wide and more than 26 meters deep.

The trailhead for the wetlands of Bosque Alegre can be reached by car or four-wheel-drive vehicle: take Route 126 to Cariblanco, then continue 7.5 kilometers toward Los Ángeles Sur. Road conditions can change, especially in wet weather.

When choosing a vacation rental, it helps to decide on the main focus of your trip first: should the architectural history of Barroeta take center stage, or a particular nature or culture theme in the wider destination of Alajuela? If you plan to visit several places, choose your accommodation based on the specific destinations you want to visit.
